"Alignments (and their mishaps)

*

*

*

e.g. In yoga and tai chi, the phrase “connect the crown (top-of-the-head) to the tailbone” is oft repeated

as a way to straighten the neck, which tends to stick out and up.

*

*

*

*

*

If you’ve ever tried to “lift the crown of the head while sinking the tailbone” -

*

feeling the connection between the two may seem an impossibility!

*

*

And, until you get the right instruction, it may well be!

*

*

*

*

*

Although I had amazing teachers of Taiji and medical Qigong, (Qigong and Taiji are is the more accurate ways to write “Tai Chi” and “Chi Gong”. Qigong is still p**n. “Chee - Gong”, Taiji p**n. “Tie - gee”.) -

it took me 4 years before a teacher explained how to make this happen, and over 8 before I got good at explaining the principle to others!

Activating the Spinal Column
Connecting Heaven and Earth . . .

*

“Tuck the chin, as if holding a cotton ball between chin and neck.”

“This activates the neck as a unit,
which then can be moved back over the spine,
making it easier to feel the connection all the way from the tailbone
to the crown of the head.”

*

You may need to relax the shoulders back and down, (which moving neck back is encouraging)!

*

*

If neck and shoulders are stiff - It may also help to walk, move, squat -
warming up legs and lower abdomen first,
which will help the upper body relax and warm, making “feeling the spine” easier.

*

*

Ideally, the sinking of the heels into the earth
connects the legs to the pelvic bowl,

which through the neck alignment (above) connects the pelvic bowl to the top of the head.

*

*

*

*

*

*

*

*

If we then open up the hands by stretching through the finger tips,
we’ve now activated the entire body at once!

*

Pretty easy, right?!

Whole-Body Awareness as Focal Point in Exercise, Meditation, and Sleep

Many spiritual traditions use gentle awareness and activation of the body as a way of quieting the mind. Technologies such as yoga or taijiquan (tai chi chuan) rely on systems of postural development to optimize the body's circulation - such that it is easier to be still and to see clearly "things as they are."

Here's an excerpt from our practice handbook we regularly use in patient care and that was developed as per our doctoral thesis work. Review it until it's 2nd nature, and you will receive it's benefit!

*

"Striving toward Whole-body awareness illuminates what is stuck, empty, or cold.

*

Because the body wants to feel great -
Noticing what is stuck, empty, or cold,
Naturally motivates the practitioner to adjust posture,

*
relaxing what is tight,
bringing warm attention to areas empty or cold -
ensuring tension, and warmth, is optimally balanced.

*

When tension and warmth is optimally balanced, blood reaches all regions, nourishing them with nutrition, and preventing blockages, and pain before it arrives!

*

The balance of tension ensures the weight of the body is optimally supported, improving balance overall, and reducing the risk of falls into old age!"

⭐️What is health coaching? ⭐️
🤩 Education 👉🏻 Accountability ⬇️
▶️ Sustainable Change.

A health coach typically works with a client for anywhere from 3 to 12 months (sometimes longer or shorter) - helping a client take and stabilize the steps needed to resolve their health concerns and achieve their health goal.

The coach personalizes their approach to the client's unique goals, needs and situation.

Some Clients are seeking deeper sleep, lowering blood pressure or reducing pain through natural methods such as nutritional change and exercise planning. Others want to develop deeper focus, mobility, or strength.
Some are not sure where to start, but want to feel better and are willing to try new things to get there!

The Client

1️⃣ Some know what they need to do, but haven't had the focus to make things stick . . . .

They start to make change . . . only to lose momentum time and time again . . . eventually, even stopping trying . telling themselves "why try? I won't wont succeed anyways . . . "

It's okay to feel that way, it's HARD. But, getting the right habits to stick doesn't have to be. With expert guidance it can be easy, enjoyable, rewarding!"

2️⃣ Some only know they want to feel much much better -
Less Pain, Less Fog,
More Gain, More Focus
Less Chaos and Depression

▶️ More Calm,
Direction and
Connection

✅ Health Coaching ensures clients master basic mental,
and lifestyle habits promoting health, health, and sustained flourishing.

One of the most effective and important source of fiber is vegetables, which contain powerful combinations of minerals and nutrients that promote skin health, blood quality, stamina, physical comfort, eye health, and more.

If you suffer from constipation - outside of water, making time for quiet focus in the mornings, and adequate movement and rest - cooked morning veggies (eg garlic lemon-butter greens) are a powerful way to inspire the digestive system to move.

It may take a few days . . . but once the body expects the fiber, it will begin making room for it.

This means a clear and clean intestinal tract - no more carrying toxins into your day. . .

More lightness, more freedom!

Of course - fiber does so much more than clear out the intestines - it's a powerful supplement to heart health and protects from risk of the most common diseases.

Enhancing Balance, Comfort, Strength and Cognitive function with Tai Chi

Longevity arts such as tai chi (tajiquan 太极拳) strengthen postural practices (such as softening the knees) that promote whole-body activation, relaxation, and circulation.

When circulation is active, it becomes easier to notice what is stuck.

As the quite intelligent body wants to feel great,

Noticing what is stuck, empty, or cold,

Naturally motivates you to adjust posture,

relaxing what is tight,

and bringing warm attention to areas that empty or cold -

ensuring tension, and warmth, is optimally balanced.

*

When tension and warmth is optimally balanced,
blood reaches all regions, nourishing them with nutrition,

and preventing and pain before it arrives.

Optimizing the balance of tension also ensures the weight of the body is distributed optimally throughout the system -
improving balance, and reducing the risk of falls into old age.

* * * * These are some of the natural effects of learning tai chi, which hundreds of studies are verifying! e.g. Huston, P., McFarlane, B. (2016). Health benefits of tai chi: What is the evidence? Canadian Family Physician, 62(11): 881-890. * * * *

*Body-Focus & Creative Work *

Nutrient-enriched blood flowing through all parts of the body
is the foundation for the physical benefits of movement, which include the production of substances such as serotonin and dopamine which improve concentration, creativity and calm.

The time spent in mindful motion becomes less about simply feeling good physically, and more about allowing the best life to come to you
(and getting strong enough to receive it).

* * * * * * * * * * * * * *

The most simple yet powerful of practices to get you started includes the
listening to the toes and fingers.

Toes and fingers contain the ends of nerves and vessels that start at the center of the body.

Gently extending through them activates the whole pathway . . . opening up legs, and arms,

helping clear out stagnation within, while improving the flow of nutrient-rich blood and nerve impulses back to spine, brain and heart.

Who would have thought that the quickest way to the center would start at the places furthest from it?

This gently extending through the fingertips and toe-tips may be practiced while sitting, laying down, moving, or standing.

It can still the wandering mind.

And it is one of the practices we encourage patients to explore - especially when laying in bed at night, or when receiving treatment in our office.

Do you have experience with this particular principle of opening up through the hands and toes? Share your experience in the comments!

Or, if not - try this out for a bit, then come back and share your result!

🧊💦 Easy-peasy Hydratin'

Drink three of these delights per day!

💧 1 x Glass Quart Jar (32 oz)
💧 Juice from 1/2 lemon
💧 Sprinkle of High mineral-content salt eg Baja Gold, Celtic Sea, Himalayan Pink( listed in order of mineral-content).
💧 Cold, Filtered Water
💧 1 or 2 Sprigs of fresh mint
💧 Ice - as desired

Experiment with adding other fruits. e.g. Fresh raspberries, watermelon, etc. Cucumber is a nice addition. Basil.

Worried about reflux? Although lemon is acidic, it’s effects on the body - likely due to mineral content - cools what's inflamed.
Still, it’s possible to overdo it.

If you notice irritation - lower the lemon, call the cucumber! Celery, fennel are also great additions!

Tips: Make a large pitcher. Cool, pour, repeat!

💧

Have you tried this? What was your experience? What are your favorite modifications?
