There are some plants that seem to bring an entire garden to life. 🌿

Tulsi — also known as holy basil — is one of them.

Beloved in herbal traditions for centuries, tulsi is what herbalists call an adaptogen: a plant traditionally used to help the body meet periods of stress with a little more steadiness and resilience. I especially love it for those moments when life feels like a lot — when you are looking for support finding your footing again. Tulsi is a beloved plant ally. And a favorite of the bees. 🐝

Plus it has found its way into something new I’m working on for Aerie Waters. 💫

🌸 Red Clover: The Meadow’s Quiet Healer

At first glance, red clover is simply a beautiful pink bloom scattered through summer fields. But for generations, herbalists have looked beyond its beauty.

The flowering tops of red clover (Trifolium pratense) have long been treasured as a gentle herb that supports the body’s natural processes of balance and renewal. Traditionally, they’ve been used to:

🍃 Support healthy lymphatic function

🌸 Offer gentle support during menopause

💗 Nourish the skin from within

🌿 Provide antioxidant-rich minerals and plant compounds

🍵 Make a pleasantly mild, slightly sweet herbal tea

When harvesting, herbalists gather the fresh flower heads just as they’re fully opened, when the blossoms are vibrant and buzzing with pollinators. (Don’t worry—the bees always get first dibs. 🐝 And I always leave enough for Mother Nature.)

Every common wildflower has a story. Red clover reminds us that some of the most valuable medicines don’t grow in remote forests—they bloom beneath our feet every summer.

Have you ever noticed red clover growing along a country road or in an old meadow?

As always, herbal traditions are just that—traditions. Herbs aren’t one-size-fits-all, and it’s wise to consult a qualified healthcare professional before using herbs medicinally, especially if you’re pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.

Rest is not a luxury. It is one of the foundations of well-being.

Yet for so many of us, truly restorative sleep feels just out of reach.

For generations, herbalists have turned to plants like valerian root, lemon balm, skullcap, passionflower, California poppy, and motherwort to help welcome the quiet that sleep requires.

The box turtle crossing your road may be older than you. She can live over 100 years. She has been using a home range of roughly 250 yards in any direction for 30 to 50 years — or longer.

The road was built through her territory. She didn't move to the road. The road moved to her.

If you find a box turtle crossing a road, move her in the direction she was already heading. Even if it seems wrong. Even if it leads away from water — she's not a water turtle. She's heading to a nesting site, a food source, or a den she's used for decades.

If you move her to a "better" location, she will spend the rest of her life trying to walk back. She will cross more roads. She will likely die trying to return to a home range she's navigated for longer than you've been alive.

Her population cannot absorb the loss of even a few adults per year. Box turtles reproduce slowly. Most hatchlings don't survive. Every adult female is irreplaceable.

Five seconds of your time. Thirty more years of hers.

You heard scratching in the attic. You found droppings. You saw them exit at dusk — small, dark shapes pouring from a gap under your soffit. Bats. You wanted them gone. You called a wildlife exclusion company. They sealed the gap in July.

The adults you excluded were mothers. Their babies — flightless pups born in late spring — are still inside your attic. They cannot follow the adults out. They cannot fly. They will crawl through your walls looking for an exit, calling for their mothers, and dying inside the structure. You will smell them in about a week.

A maternity colony of little brown bats may contain 30 to 50 nursing females. Each one eats 1,000 or more mosquito-sized insects per night. The colony you sealed out was removing 30,000 to 50,000 insects from the airspace around your home every single night.

The correct procedure — and the one any licensed bat exclusion specialist follows — is to install one-way exclusion devices in late summer or early fall, after the pups can fly. The adults exit through the device, cannot re-enter, and relocate to alternative roosts. The pups, now capable of flight, exit with them. No one is trapped.

Sealing a bat roost between May and August traps flightless young inside. It is illegal in many states under wildlife protection laws, and it results in dead bats in your walls, structural contamination, and the loss of the most effective insect control system your property had.

Seal in October. Not July. The timing is the difference between exclusion and entombment.
