🌿 FROM THE APOTHECARY

Lemon Balm: Getting to Know the Plant

Before we prepare an herb, it's important to first become familiar with the plant itself.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is a perennial herb in the mint family (Lamiaceae). It is recognized by its bright green, softly wrinkled leaves with gently scalloped edges. When the leaves are lightly rubbed between your fingers, they release a pleasant citrus fragrance reminiscent of fresh lemons.

During the growing season, small white to pale yellow flowers appear, attracting bees and other beneficial pollinators. In fact, the botanical name Melissa comes from the Greek word for "honeybee," reflecting the plant's long association with bees.

Lemon Balm thrives in well-drained soil and enjoys partial to full sunlight, making it a wonderful addition to many home gardens.

As we continue our journey this month, we'll move beyond identifying the plant and begin exploring its historical journey and traditional uses.
