Genetics and genomics are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. 🧬
While they are closely related, each field helps us answer different questions about our DNA and our health.
**Genetics** focuses on individual genes and how they are inherited from one generation to the next. It helps explain why certain traits run in families and how changes in a single gene can lead to inherited conditions.
**Genomics** takes a broader approach by studying an organism's entire genome, the complete set of DNA. Instead of looking at one gene at a time, genomics examines how genes work together and interact with environmental and lifestyle factors to influence health.
Why does this matter?
Many common diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers, are not caused by a single gene. They result from complex interactions among multiple genes and environmental factors. By studying the entire genome, researchers can better understand disease risk, identify new treatment opportunities, and learn why one person may respond differently to a medication than another.
This growing field is also helping advance precision medicine, an approach to healthcare that uses a person's unique genetic information to guide prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. As our understanding of the genome continues to grow, so does our ability to provide more personalized and effective care.
