Heavy work occupational therapy exercises help build strength, coordination, and focus — key foundations for growth and learning. At Heartspring, we celebrate every small step toward big goals!
Tim Koontz, an occupational therapist in the Heartspring Therapeutic School, walks us through a heavy work routine perfect for these chilly winter days!
Early action:
✅ Supports Developmental Milestones – Early support can help children develop important skills like walking, talking, or interacting with others.
✅ Builds Strong Foundations – Small challenges now can grow into bigger ones later. Addressing them early can set your child up for long-term success.
✅ Empowers Families – Early intervention gives parents tools, resources, and confidence to help their child thrive.
✅ Maximizes Brain Plasticity – The earlier you act, the more flexible and responsive the brain is to intervention strategies.

Our internal teams meet at least once a week and invite external stakeholders like parents, guardians, and home district representatives to an all-encompassing meeting at least once a month.
This interdisciplinary and supportive environment fosters collaboration and communication between team members across the organization.
No one is alone at Heartspring because working together yields better results for the children in our care. It's really that simple.
Happy New Year from Heartspring! 🥳🎇
Here's to a year of growth, milestones, and joyful moments! 💙✨
We help families every day as a partner in children's progress. Whether a child has a possible delay or they need therapies to prevent a delay, we invite families to be a part of their child's care plan and actively participate in sessions so the skills we work on in the clinic can be reinforced at home.
Navigating care can feel overwhelming and stressful, but you are not alone.

Practicing with Play-Doh can be a great way to prepare children’s occupational therapy skills to bake and decorate cookies this holiday season!
Follow along with our occupational therapist, Emily Anderson!
For more information about occupational therapy and tips your family can use to practice these skills over the holiday break, read our latest article at https://bit.ly/4fgGZCX.
Each year, we're honored to host Spirit Day of Giving with Spirit AeroSystems, Inc. for the students in our Therapeutic Residential and Day School!
Even if the children can't go home for the holidays, we get the opportunity to bring the special season straight to them with personalized gifts for every student.
Thank you to the wonderful employees at Spirit who provide the gifts, volunteer to deliver the presents, and make this such a magical day for the students in our care. 💙
After all, the true gift is giving.
Routines help children find balance and develop independence. But what happens when holidays, parties, and vacations disrupt routines this time of year?
Some kids may enjoy the break, but others require additional support and structure to fit their needs.
Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA, helps recognize patterns of behavior, understand why it’s happening, and modify the behavior for a preferred outcome. ABA often works for individuals with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders.
However, even kids without a diagnosis can benefit from schedules, options, and safe spaces during the holidays!
Read our latest article at https://bit.ly/4g6I2Xr for ABA techniques your family can use to make the holiday break (from routine) less stressful.
Don’t want the holiday break to interrupt your child’s communication skill development? Include speech-language therapy activities in your holiday traditions! ☃️
Speech therapy doesn’t only exist in a clinical space. Weaving speech-language therapy techniques into everyday life reinforces the skills children learn, helping them accelerate their progress over time.

Thank you to our wonderful community of families, supporters, and staff who make Heartspring a place to be grateful for every day.
