Let’s talk summer myths…
“I don’t need moisturizer because of humidity.”
- Humidity is not moisture. Lightweight serums or hydrators are still necessary to balance oil/water levels.
“Exfoliate more to remove sweat/oil.”
- Excessive exfoliation in summer causes damage to the skin barrier and makes skin overly sensitive and more susceptible to sunburn, hyperpigmentation and other damage.
”Facials or peels are bad for summer.”
- Many professional treatments are safe if you use proper sun protection afterward, with some actually helping with oil control. Compliance is key. Make sure your provider and you have discussed your lifestyle, schedule and post-care in depth.
“The higher the SPF, the longer you can stay out in the sun.”
- No matter the SPF, all sunscreens should be reapplied at least every two hours, and more often if swimming or sweating. SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays so anything over SPF 50 is a marketing ploy; it’s not offering any additional protection.
“Sun exposure clears up acne.”
- While sun and heat can temporarily dry pimples, they actually lead to increased oil production which damages the skin barrier, leading to potentially worse breakouts later.
“Laser hair removal is off-limits.”
- It is fine as long as the area is not actively tanned or sunburned and is protected with sunscreen. Obviously deciding to start laser hair removal on your legs is not advised but there’s no reason to skip areas like your underarms or bikini area.
