Researchers are investigating another unexpected question about GLP 1 medications: could they be associated with how our eyes age?
A 2026 study compared 68,536 matched adults age 60 and older without diabetes who had overweight or obesity. Researchers found GLP 1 receptor agonist use was associated with lower five year risks of several age related eye conditions compared with other weight loss medications.
For age related macular degeneration specifically, the reported relative risk was 0.33.
This was an observational study, so it shows an association, not proof that GLP 1 medications prevent eye disease.
