The rapid expansion of energy-intensive data centers is projected to drive over $20 billion in annual public health costs and lead to 1,300 premature death in the US alone.

Researchers from the University of California just found that the data centers driving artificial intelligence are extracting a steep, hidden toll on local communities. To begin with, these massive facilities operate as major sources of environmental disruption, generating noise pollution exceeding 90 decibels.

And crucially, the reliance of many hyperscale data centers on fossil fuels and backup diesel generators releases dangerous air pollutants like fine particulate matter. The researchers estimate this air pollution will trigger approximately 600,000 asthma cases and 1,300 premature deaths annually in the U.S. by 2030, disproportionately threatening vulnerable populations like children and low-income communities.

Beyond health hazards, the data center boom is squeezing the wallets of residential energy consumers.

Because these facilities demand unprecedented power, utilities must build expensive infrastructure upgrades, often passing these costs to local households. Analysts recently projected a 20 percent utility rate increase for Pennsylvania families to accommodate grid expansions.

While some state officials are pushing standards to make developers pay for their own grid upgrades, communities are increasingly advocating for local zoning ordinances, strict emission caps, and clean-energy mandates to protect their backyards from unchecked corporate expansion.
