**Thermal imaging**, also called thermography, is a non-invasive imaging technology that measures and maps temperature patterns at the surface of the body.
A specialized infrared camera detects differences in skin-surface temperature and creates images that show patterns of heat and thermal symmetry.
These patterns reflect **physiological activity** occurring in the body, such as changes in circulation and blood flow at the skin's surface.

Thermal imaging looks at **physiology rather than anatomy**.
Traditional imaging such as mammography, ultrasound, X-ray, CT, and MRI is designed to look at structures and anatomy.
Thermal imaging provides a different type of information by observing patterns of temperature and physiological response.
