A song can do what medication cannot.

It can trigger a memory. Transport someone back. Bring joy in difficult moments. Calm restlessness. Create connection between silence and words.

VistaRiver includes enriching music therapy as part of hospice care. This isn't background noise. It's intentional therapeutic music matched
to each person's needs and preferences.

Favorite songs from their life. Live musicians bringing presence. Gentle melodies during restless hours. Sound as medicine.

Music matters in hospice.

More visits. That's where it starts.

Most hospice providers follow minimum standards. VistaRiver goes beyond. You receive more visits from your care team, not fewer.
More attention. More presence. More support.

But it's not just frequency. It's enriching music therapy bringing comfort when words fail. It's dedicated volunteers providing companionship and respite.
It's local ownership meaning decisions prioritize your care, not corporate profits.

What sets us apart isn't one thing. It's everything we do differently.

The final days are different. The pace slows. Conversations quiet. Energy shifts.

Your loved one might sleep more. Need less food. Spend more time resting than talking. This is the body naturally preparing, not suffering
or declining suddenly.

Many families worry these changes mean something is wrong. They're actually signs that things are progressing as they should.

VistaRiver nurses explain what's happening in ways that make sense. They normalize the changes so you understand this is natural. They answer questions without clinical coldness. They sit with you through uncertainty. They say the things that bring peace in scary moments.

The final days can be profound. Quiet. Sacred. A time to just be together without the noise of medical appointments and treatment decisions.

Our nurses help you move through these days with less fear and more presence.

You're not alone in this.

Start in the bedroom. Can the hospital bed fit? Can someone move around it comfortably? Can a nurse access both sides? Is there a bedside table within reach?

Move to the bathroom. Can someone in a wheelchair or using a walker get through the doorway? Is there a commode chair nearby or will bathroom transfers
be difficult? Is the floor slip-resistant? Are grab bars needed?

Check medication storage. Is it secure away from children or pets? Can medications be organized clearly so nothing gets missed? Can refrigerated medications stay cold?

Look at pathways. Are walkways clear for wheelchair movement? Are there obstacles? Can equipment be positioned without creating hazards? Is lighting adequate for nurses providing nighttime care?

Consider comfort. Where will family sit during visits? Is there adequate seating for people staying close? Is temperature control comfortable?

VistaRiver nurses visit and assess. They suggest modifications working with what you have, not expensive changes. Sometimes it's furniture rearrangement.
Sometimes it's simple additions.

Your home can heal.

You don't have to do medical tasks to matter tremendously.

While nurses manage pain and medication, while aides handle personal care, while chaplains address spiritual questions, you can provide comfort only family can give.

Soft touch matters. A cool cloth on the forehead during restlessness. A hand held gently. Sitting close without speaking. Physical presence that says I'm here.

Familiar sounds matter. Playing their favorite music. Reading their favorite book aloud. Hearing voices of grandchildren or old friends. Sound creates connection when words fade.

Environment matters. Fresh flowers in the room. Open curtains for natural light. Temperature adjusted for comfort. A tidy peaceful space instead of medical chaos.

Presence matters. You don't need to fill silence. Sitting quietly together is enough. Being there matters more than saying anything.

Memories matter. Sharing old stories. Looking at photos together. Reminiscing about good times. Connecting past to present.

Your role is being family, not being medical. That's where your power lies.

Myths about hospice referrals:

You need a doctor's permission. False. Doctors can refer, but families can call directly. You can explore hospice without anyone's approval.

You have to be dying to call. False. It's never too early to learn about options or ask questions. Many families call months before needing immediate care.

Calling means you're immediately enrolled. False. A consultation is just a conversation. You can talk to VistaRiver without committing to anything.

You need to be at home. False. Hospice works in homes, nursing facilities, assisted living, hospitals.

Here's what's true:

Call VistaRiver anytime you're wondering if hospice makes sense. We listen without judgment. We answer questions. We explain options. We help you decide what's right for your situation. If you're not ready, that's okay. If you are ready, we walk you through everything.

No pressure. No judgment. Just honest conversation about what matters.

Before Hospice: Blood pressure pills. Cholesterol medication. Diabetes management. Preventive drugs for diseases years away. Multiple medications multiple times daily.

After Hospice Begins: What actually brings comfort right now?

That's the only question that matters.

The blood pressure pill preventing a stroke five years from now? Stops. The cholesterol medication protecting future heart health? Irrelevant. The preventive antibiotic
for potential infection? Unnecessary. The vitamins and supplements promising longevity? Gone.

What stays: Pain medication. Anxiety relief. Breathing support. Nausea management. Sleep help. Anything creating suffering gets addressed. Anything creating
side effects without comfort benefit stops.

VistaRiver nurses simplify regimens dramatically. Patients often feel better on fewer pills. Caregivers stress less managing fewer medications. Everyone focuses
on comfort instead of prevention.

Medications serve comfort now. Not future health.

The person you love might not remember you. But they can feel your love. That's all that matters now.

Advanced dementia and Alzheimer's in hospice mean abandoning logic and embracing presence. They're confused about time.

You stop correcting them. They're anxious about imagined things. You validate the feeling instead of the reality. They repeat the same question fifty times.
You answer with patience every single time.

VistaRiver nurses specializing in dementia care understand this language of presence over memory.

A familiar object brings comfort without explanation needed. A song triggers joy even when they don't remember the song.
A hand held creates connection that transcends
whether they know whose hand it is. Routines provide safety when nothing makes sense. Gentle touch says you matter.

Behavioral changes aren't rejection. Pain isn't malice. Confusion isn't your failure.

This stage requires different care. We provide it.

Your loved one's story matters. Not just to you. To their grandchildren not yet born. To future family members who will never meet them.

To anyone who knows their name.

Legacy work is about capturing that story before it's gone.

Recording interviews where they tell their own story in their own voice | Writing letters to grandchildren for future birthdays | Creating memory books with photos, stories, favorite sayings | Handprint art projects that become keepsakes | Documenting family recipes with the person's memories attached | Video recording messages for important future moments

These projects give families something to hold onto that feels like presence even after. Grandchildren can hear their voice. Future family members can
meet them through their words. The legacy continues living.

Your loved one's life shaped everyone who knew them. Capture that impact.

Call VistaRiver at 503-542-7090 for legacy project guidance.

Different diseases create different needs in hospice.

Someone with COPD faces breathing anxiety that's completely different from heart failure swelling. Parkinson's progression creates movement challenges that other conditions don't. Cancer pain patterns differ from dementia's gradual cognitive changes.

VistaRiver's nurses understand these differences deeply.

COPD care means managing oxygen needs, monitoring breathing changes, preventing infections | Heart disease care means understanding swelling,
medication adjustments, fatigue patterns | Parkinson's care means addressing movement changes, swallowing challenges, speech changes | Each
disease has its own language that our nurses speak fluently

Your loved one's specific diagnosis matters. The care should be customized to what that disease actually does, not generic hospice applied to everyone.

Understanding disease progression reduces fear. Expert disease-specific care brings peace.
