45 years ago today. The New York Times runs a short article: "Rare cancer seen in 41 homosexuals."⁠ The people who were dying at the time (and we now know had been dying for decades before) were young and otherwise healthy and, despite the headline of this article, not just homosexuals. Doctors did not understand what was happening or whether the cancer was contagious. The author of this article, Lawrence Altman, would later say: "these announcements were the first official harbingers of AIDS … But at the time, we had little idea what we were dealing with."

Today, we know a little more about what we are dealing with. We understand that ; we understand that HAART can help those with live long, healthy lives; and that can help prevent HIV transmission. ⁠We also know the AIDS crisis is not over.

45 years after this article was published, we still mourn the over 100,000 New Yorkers lost to the epidemic, still fight for those whose lives are disproportionately impacted by HIV and AIDS, still remember how the six words in the headline of this article forewarned a crisis that would go on to be largely ignored by the government. 45 years later and we still won’t give up the fight.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Pietrogallo.

Tom was more than a leader to The Poverello Center family — he was a compassionate advocate, visionary, mentor, and friend to countless individuals throughout South Florida. Through his dedication and leadership, Tom helped transform The Poverello Center from a traditional AIDS Service Organization into a broader, sustainable community organization focused on dignity, nutrition, wellness, and compassionate care for all.

Under Tom’s leadership, The Poverello Center expanded programs that now serve more than 3,500 families living with chronic and critical illnesses and food insecurity throughout South Florida. He championed healthier grocery options, increased nutritional education opportunities, created youth “Healthy Fuel Packs” to help underserved teens facing weekend food insecurity, and guided the development of mobile and pop-up pantry programs bringing healthy food directly into underserved communities and food deserts.

Tom dedicated his professional life to improving the health and well-being of others. He earned his Master of Social Work from the University of South Florida, obtained his clinical social work licensure in 2001, and later earned his MBA from Florida Atlantic University in 2003. He proudly served as a member of the National Association of Social Workers and represented Ryan White Part A on Broward County’s HIV Integrated Workgroup and System of Care initiatives.

Tom’s impact reached far beyond programs and services. He believed deeply in treating every person with dignity, compassion, and respect. His kindness, calm guidance, and unwavering commitment to the community touched the lives of staff, volunteers, clients, partners, and friends alike.

During this difficult time, we ask our community to keep Tom’s family, loved ones, and the entire Poverello Center family in your thoughts and prayers.

Memorial service information will be shared at a later date as arrangements become available.

His legacy of compassion, service, and hope will continue to guide our mission for many years to come.
