Feeling Low Self-Esteem? Try Looking Outward
When you’re feeling self-conscious or struggling with low self-esteem, where is your attention?
Usually, it’s on you.
Do they like me?
Am I saying the right thing?
Do I look okay?
Am I interesting enough?
What are they thinking about me?
The more we examine ourselves, the more uncomfortable we can become. It’s like standing much too close to a mirror—every tiny flaw suddenly looks enormous.
Here’s a simple tip: When you’re with other people, become genuinely interested in them.
Ask questions. Listen closely to their answers. Wonder what makes them happy, what they’re excited about, or what has been happening in their lives. Look for something you appreciate about them.
When your attention moves away from judging yourself and toward connecting with someone else, something wonderful happens: your low self-esteem begins to disappear.
You’re no longer trying to impress. You’re simply being present.
This doesn’t mean ignoring your own needs or believing other people are more important than you. It means giving yourself a break from constant self-evaluation. You stop wondering, “How am I doing?” and begin wondering, “Who is this person in front of me?”
Ironically, the people we find most confident and comfortable are often not the ones trying hardest to be impressive. They’re the ones who make us feel noticed, heard, and interesting.
The next time you walk into a meeting, a party, or any situation where you feel insecure, give yourself a new assignment:
Find out something interesting about someone else.
You may discover that confidence doesn’t always come from thinking more highly of yourself. Sometimes, it comes from thinking about yourself less.
And when those old patterns of self-doubt feel too deeply rooted to change on your own, hypnosis can help you quiet the inner critic and develop a calmer, more natural sense of confidence.
