Most people buy candles for the scent and the atmosphere.

But what the candle is made from matters, too.

🍯 HUAJILLA HONEY — WHAT IT ACTUALLY DOES FOR THE HUMAN BODY

Most people think of honey as a natural sweetener.

It is so much more than that.

Honey is a biologically complex substance containing naturally occurring phenolic compounds, flavonoids, organic acids, enzymes, antioxidants and other bioactive compounds that have been studied for their antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and tissue-supporting properties.

And the Huajilla Honey we carry at Bath & Bubble Cottage is especially important to us because it comes directly from OUR OWN BEEKEEPER and is sold EXCLUSIVELY through Bath & Bubble Cottage. 🐝🍯

This isn't commercially sourced honey that I order from a distributor.

We know where our honey comes from. We know our beekeeper. And this beautiful Texas honey is also an ingredient I personally use in a number of my product formulations because honey has very specific properties that can benefit the skin.

🍯 WHAT HONEY DOES INSIDE THE BODY

ANTIOXIDANT SUPPORT

Honey naturally contains phenolic compounds and flavonoids that act as antioxidants.

Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals — unstable molecules that can contribute to oxidative damage within cells and tissues.

Oxidative stress is associated with cellular aging, inflammation and the development of numerous chronic diseases, which is one reason honey continues to be studied as a functional food.

🔥 ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY

Honey has demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity in scientific research.

Its phenolic compounds and other bioactive constituents appear to interact with biological pathways involved in the body's inflammatory response.

That does NOT mean honey replaces medication or medical treatment.

It means the centuries-old medicinal use of honey has genuine biological mechanisms that modern researchers can now investigate and measure.

❤️ METABOLIC & CARDIOVASCULAR RESEARCH

This one surprises a lot of people.

Controlled clinical research has investigated honey consumption in relation to cardiometabolic markers including:

• Fasting blood glucose

• LDL cholesterol
• HDL cholesterol
• Triglycerides

Some research has found modest improvements in several of these markers.

And here's something particularly interesting:

The floral source and processing of the honey matter.

Honey from different plants can contain different concentrations and combinations of bioactive compounds.

Honey is still a natural source of sugar, so more is not automatically better. But chemically and biologically, honey is much more complex than simply spooning refined sugar into your food.

😮‍💨 COUGH & THROAT SUPPORT

There is a reason Grandma reached for honey.

Honey can coat and soothe irritated throat tissue, and clinical research has supported its usefulness for cough relief, particularly in children old enough to safely consume honey.

Honey should NEVER be given to a child younger than 12 months.

This is one of the reasons I love working with honey in my formulations.

Honey naturally creates an environment that is difficult for many microorganisms.

Its antimicrobial properties are associated with several factors working together:

• Naturally low pH
• High sugar concentration
• Low water availability
• Osmotic activity
• Enzymatic production of hydrogen peroxide in many varieties of honey
• Plant-derived phenolic compounds and other bioactive substances

That's chemistry.

And that's exactly what interests me when I'm developing a formulation.

💧 HONEY IS A NATURAL HUMECTANT

This is a BIG reason honey is valuable in skin care.

A humectant attracts and retains moisture.

Instead of simply coating dry skin, humectant ingredients help attract water to the outer layers of the skin.

That makes honey particularly interesting in formulations designed to support dry, stressed or compromised-feeling skin.

🩹 WOUND & TISSUE-HEALING RESEARCH

Honey has been studied extensively in modern wound care.

Specially prepared medical-grade honey is used in some clinical wound-care applications because researchers have documented antimicrobial activity and effects that can support the wound-healing environment.

Honey has been investigated for its ability to support:

• A moist healing environment
• Tissue repair
• Re-epithelialization
• Management of bacterial burden
• Inflammatory regulation within wounds

Important distinction: the honey in our jars is a FOOD product. Medical wound treatment uses appropriately prepared medical-grade honey.

But understanding this research helps explain why honey has been valued for skin and wound care for thousands of years.

🌿 SKIN BARRIER & TISSUE SUPPORT

Honey's combination of humectant, antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties has also made it an important subject in dermatological and cosmetic research.

And THIS is why you'll find honey in some of my Bath & Bubble Cottage formulations.

I don't choose an ingredient because it sounds pretty on a label.

Every single ingredient I put into a formulation has a purpose.

When I formulate with honey, I'm interested in its chemistry — its humectant properties, naturally acidic environment, antioxidant compounds and the research surrounding its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and skin-supporting activity.

🍯 SO WHAT MAKES HUAJILLA HONEY DIFFERENT?

Not all honey is chemically identical.

The plants the bees forage influence the finished honey's flavor, aroma, color, phenolic profile, antioxidant activity and overall chemical composition.

Huajilla is associated with the Texas landscape, making Huajilla honey a distinctive regional honey.

And ours has an even more important distinction:

I had the pleasure of meeting Jenna when she invited me my mom and sister in to enjoy her fan to escape the heat, when inside the store I realized she Made all kinds of neat soaps but what caught my eye was her eczema soap.
