Some days remind us that work is about more than what we do—it is about the people beside us. ❤️

Our first POD Family Cookout brought together the staff and families of Applewood, Keene, Pheasant Wood, AKA :Keystone Collaborative, for a beautiful day filled with laughter, good food, games, and unforgettable moments.

We proudly celebrated our dedicated team members, honored their years of service, and watched our children smile as they received back-to-school backpacks.

The smiles, hugs, and laughter told the whole story. We may work in different buildings, but when we come together, we are one family.

Thank you to everyone who made this special day possible. These are the moments we will carry in our hearts.

🌅 FROM DOUBT TO DISCHARGE 🌅

Eight days ago, Deedee walked through our doors carrying more than just her bags — she was carrying the weight of past experiences at facilities where she didn't feel heard.

Today, she walks out standing taller. Not just because her physical therapy worked (though it absolutely did) — but because somewhere between check-in and check-out, she found a team that actually paid attention.

What changed?
- A call bell that got answered — not eventually, but right on it
- Aides who treated her voice as important as her vitals
- A care team that saw a person, not a diagnosis

Deedee has been in this system before. She knows the difference between facilities that go through the motions and ones that actually show up. And she told us, in no uncertain terms, which one Applewood is.

LEADING WITH HEART: Meet Michele

Sometimes the newest face on the team ends up teaching everyone else something about heart.

Michele Thurber joined Applewood's Accounts Payable team not long ago — and yet, ask around, and you'd think she'd been here for years. Why? Because she never waited to "learn the ropes" before jumping in to help. From day one, she just showed up — for residents, for coworkers, for whatever the moment needed.

Here's the thing about Michele: her job title says numbers and invoices. But her actions say something else entirely. She answers call lights without being asked. If she can't personally help, she doesn't shrug and walk away — she finds someone who can. That's not "not my department" thinking. That's just who she is.

And then there's her laugh — the kind that travels down a hallway and makes a hard day feel a little lighter.

This week, we're celebrating Michele Thurber as our Leading With Heart Award recipient. Proof that caring for residents isn't limited to clinical staff — it's a mindset, and Michele carries it everywhere she goes.

LEADING WITH HEART: This One's for Kim

There's a quiet kind of leadership that doesn't show up in job titles — it shows up in the empty seat someone fills without being asked, the extra hour someone gives without checking the clock, and the smile someone brings even on the hardest days.

That's Kim.

Ask anyone at Applewood and you'll hear the same thing: when something needs doing — rec coverage, the dining room, a resident who just needs someone to sit with them for a minute — Kim is already there. Not because it's in her job description, but because it's in her.

She's never once said "that's not my job." In a field where burnout is real and everyone's stretched thin, that says everything about who she is.

This week, we're proud to recognize Kimberley Simoneau as our Leading With Heart Award recipient. Not for one big moment — but for a hundred small ones that add up to something that can't be faked: genuine care.

Kim, thank you for showing up — for your residents, for your team, for everyone who needs you. You make Applewood feel like home.

🦋 Applewood Center is officially a Certified Butterfly Garden! 🦋
We're excited to share that our garden has been certified by the North American Butterfly Association — meaning it now provides real resources that help increase butterfly and monarch populations in the world.
From pollinator-friendly plants to a habitat our residents can enjoy every day, this certification is a beautiful reminder that healing spaces and thriving nature go hand in hand.

Another "Road Home" success story!

Dorothy's comeback wasn't a solo effort — it took her own grit, paired with the daily dedication of our Applewood therapy and nursing team. This is what teamwork in recovery looks like.

We're so proud of Dorothy and honored to have been part of her recovery journey. As she put it herself: "You all have proven Applewood Center to be the cadillac of nursing homes!"
