Capacity is creating space for fear and anxiety to exist. Through capacity, we can experience stress and include these feelings as a part of life. The nervous system actually becomes more resilient through processing the physical responses of fear, anxiety, and stress.
When we experience difficult feelings, we may feel vulnerable, sensitive, or exposed. We may perceive that this experience makes us weaker or more vulnerable. When we have tools, support, and guidance to navigate difficult feelings in the nervous system, we can learn how to slowly process stress.
In relation to stress, capacity grows. For example, I may develop more space and strength in my physical body to process stress. When I feel activation, I bring attention to my chest and abdomen and feel the soft and gentle sensations in my body that are present with these feelings.
I may also utilize awareness to hold my feelings. My awareness stays with difficult sensations and does not abandon them.
Capacity may also develop through trusting others to support me. I may share my feelings and rely on a relational space for support. This gives me room to articulate my feelings rather than hold them inside.
We spend so much energy trying to reject, control, and manage difficult emotions. We may not realize that one of the simplest things we can do is create more space for our feelings to exist and rely on our bodies to process our emotions.
I find it really relieving to know that acceptance and having more space to be myself can bring more regulation to the nervous system. We are all searching for more capacity for our feelings and emotions to be safely felt and processed
