Getting to know families prenatally is everything!! I wanna know what fills your cup before we ever enter the birth portal. Being deep in labor land isn’t the most appropriate time to be answering lots of questions or even knowing what to ask for to fill a need.

✨Quality time can look like intentional presence. Letting them know they aren’t alone, and even knowing when to give space.
✨Physical touch can be soothing strokes, massage, and pain coping techniques.
✨Words of affirmation can be vocalized or written on cards scattered throughout the room. A reminder of strength, perseverance, and their “why”. Affirming what they feel is normal.
✨Acts of service can be fetching and feeding nourishing snacks + offering sips of hydration. Cooling them off with fans, pouring warm water down the back, aromatherapy.
✨Gifts in this space can really be a combination of them all. For me it’s often in the form of making tea, preparing perineal healing blend, anticipating a vibe switch with music and lighting. Guiding partner with suggestions on how to help.

Asking folks about their love languages are a standard practice in our prenatal prep! Can you imagine how this is helpful?

Some of the elderberries have been sacrificed for experiments involving bugs and my 5 year old but at least he knows not to eat the uncooked berries!!

It’s so sweet to have them harvesting with me and slowly learning about plants and preparations each year. My daughter loves to help me make herbal teas and my son of course looks forward to the elderberry syrup gummies.

My goal is to teach them how to care for themselves and others when possible and minimize outsourcing of personal power. While still leaning on experts, technology, and systemized medicine when absolutely necessary.

What an honor it is - to cook for a mother in her home while she rests and nurses her newborn baby. To play outside with her older kiddos as a grandmother gets to meet her grand daughter for the first time.

What an honor it is to be invited into the tender places, full of love.

I made the garlic ginger fried rice with bacon from the Heng Ou recipe! A real treasure of a cook book.

As humans, we always want predictability. Our brains look for patterns, and rely on experience to bring familiarity to the present moment.

While there’s many things about birth that don’t always have rhyme or reason, there are some aspects that we can observe a rhythm with.

Noticing a pattern (or lack of) with contractions is a helpful tool. In active labor, these surges gradually (or quickly, iykyk) get longer, stronger, and closer together. If you have to travel to your birthing location, a good rule of thumb is to start heading there when contractions are 4-5 mins apart, lasting 1 minute or longer, for 1 full hour.

We can’t ever predict how long labors will last, but we know that once the surges are lasting more than a minute long, every 2-3 minutes, we are getting subjectively “close”. And while contraction pattern certainly isn’t a crystal ball, I love to use it as a grounding point for the person riding those waves. It gives us a chance to bookend each contraction with “start” and “stop” even if we don’t pay attention to the data on the screen.

If they are sporadic, all over the place, still consistently happening but not consistent in frequency or duration, it *could* indicate the body trying to help baby into a more optimal position.

Did you use a contraction timer during labor?? Lmk 🥰
