We aim to assist people with disabilities by offering an array of resources and cross-disability expertise in our service area of Forsyth, Stokes, Davie, Davidson, Surry, and Yadkin counties in NC. We want to simply encourage people to make good choices and exercise control over their own lives, to expand access to information and resources, to increase their independence, and to improve the quality of their lives. WE BELIEVE in consumer choice, consumer expertise, and community-based living. OUR JOB is to work with the consumer to identify and pursue goals that lead to greater independence. We use advocacy and public awareness to remove physical and attitudinal barriers throughout our service area. Amber shares her personal experience with Ava and provides insight into what life is like with a service dog, including the ways Ava supports her independence and daily life.

We hope Amber’s story offers another perspective on the important relationship between service dogs and the people they serve, while encouraging greater understanding and respect for service animals.

On Friday, August 7, we were excited to welcome Financial Pathways Of The Piedmont to Solutions for Independence for a Financial Literacy Lunch & Learn! 🍽️📚

Our staff and consumers came together to learn more about budgeting, managing debt, financial planning, and the resources available to help individuals work toward their financial goals.

In recognition of Assistance Dog Awareness Week, Solutions for Independence had the opportunity to sit down with Chris Flynt and his Guide Dog, Hayden, to talk about life with a Guide Dog and answer some commonly asked questions about service animals.

From understanding the role of a Guide Dog to learning proper service animal etiquette, our goal is to provide education and promote greater understanding and respect for individuals who rely on service animals every day.

August is Assistance Dog Awareness Week, and we are celebrating the important role assistance dogs play in promoting independence and accessibility.

This month, the Winston-Salem Mayor’s Council for Persons with Disabilities is hosting a special presentation at Solutions for Independence featuring Chris Flynt of Blind Power Company and Amber Laudicina of Koda Dog Training. Learn about the role of service dogs, common misconceptions, and the differences between service dogs and emotional support animals.

🚨 Winston-Salem Water Main Break Update 🚨

Good morning and happy Thursday!
Due to yesterday's major water main break affecting parts of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, some homes may experience low water pressure, temporary water outages, or be under a boil water advisory.

Here are the four Bottled Water Pick Up Sites in Winston-Salem:

Distribution will start July 30 at 10 a.m. at four locations:

-Griffith Elementary School
-Kennedy High School
-Kernersville Elementary School
-Walkertown High School

We're thinking about everyone affected by today's water main break and boil water advisory.

As the local Center for Independent Living, we are here for our community.

If your family or your pets need drinking water, you're welcome to stop by our office. We have clean water available and are happy to help fill water jugs or containers while supplies last.

If you're without water and need to use a restroom, just send us a message before heading over so we can make sure someone is here to help.

We're more than an advocacy organization, we're neighbors, and we're happy to help however we can. Stay safe, and don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything.

On July 26, Solutions for Independence was honored to join the Mayor’s Council for Persons with Disabilities in celebrating the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The event featured a powerful panel of individuals with diverse disabilities who shared their lived experiences, discussed disability etiquette, answered thoughtful questions, and spoke about the challenges they face, what they wish others knew, and the changes that can make our community more inclusive. Attendees gained valuable insight into blindness, wheelchair use, dwarfism, and invisible disabilities, while learning simple, everyday ways to support accessibility and inclusion.

Guests also enjoyed a screening of Back on Track, a documentary highlighting the lives of members of the Triad Trackers Wheelchair Basketball Team, including Solutions for Independence’s Chief Operating Officer, Chris Rivera.

The celebration also brought together community organizations and resources, including Hubzone Technology Initiative, the Winston-Salem Human Relations Department, Horizons Residential Care, PACE of the Triad, and Solutions for Independence. With great food, refreshments, and meaningful conversations, the event was a wonderful reminder that building a more accessible community starts with listening, learning, and taking action.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped celebrate the lasting impact of the ADA while continuing the work toward a more inclusive future! 💙

This no cost, community-centered event is designed for individuals with or without disabilities, families, caregivers, and anyone interested in adaptive sports, recreation, and community resources.

On Ed Roberts Day, we celebrate his belief that disability is a natural part of human diversity and that people with disabilities should have access to community-based, consumer-driven supports.

His legacy lives on in the work we do every day!
