MYTH: “My dog walks on pavement, so I don’t need to worry about nail trims.”

FACT: Pavement can naturally wear down some of a dog’s nails, but it usually doesn’t keep every nail at the proper length.

Wear can be uneven, and dewclaws don’t touch the ground at all.

Long nails can affect the way a dog stands and walks, so it’s still important to check them regularly, even if your pup gets plenty of sidewalk time.

Then you put the same old collar back on.

Collars and harnesses collect dirt, oils, moisture and all kinds of outdoor grime over time. Giving them a regular wash helps keep that freshly groomed pup feeling a little fresher, too.

Just check the care instructions first, since not every collar or harness can go straight into the washing machine.

Clean dog. Clean collar. Complete the package. 🐶✨

Between the Grooms Tip: Don’t forget behind the ears! 👂🐶

For dogs with longer or softer coats, the fur behind and underneath the ears can be one of the easiest places for tangles to hide.

A few gentle passes with your brush and comb between grooming appointments can help stop those little tangles from turning into uncomfortable mats.

And remember: if you find a mat that is tight against the skin, don’t try to cut it out with scissors. Dog skin can easily get pulled up into the mat, making accidental cuts much easier than you might think.

When in doubt, leave it for your groomer. 💜

FIVE YEARS! 💜

On September 20, 2021, Dakota’s Dogs officially began, and it’s hard to believe I’m celebrating five years in business today.

When I started Dakota’s Dogs, I wanted to create something a little different. A place where I could work one-on-one with each dog, get to know their personalities and needs, and give them the individual attention they deserve.

Five years later, that is still the heart of everything I do.

To all of my clients who have trusted me with your dogs over the years: thank you.

Thank you for supporting my small business, recommending me to your friends and family, sharing your pups with me, and allowing me to do something I genuinely love every day.

And to all of the dogs who have walked through my door over these five years, whether they came bouncing in excited to see me or needed a little extra patience and reassurance, thank you for trusting me too. 🐶

I’m incredibly grateful for the community that has grown around Dakota’s Dogs and especially grateful that I get to spend my days taking care of some pretty amazing pups.

Here’s to five years of wet noses, wagging tails, dog hair everywhere, and so many wonderful memories.

🦷🐶 Your dog’s teeth need brushing between grooming appointments too!

A teeth brushing during a grooming appointment is great, but it shouldn’t be the only time your dog’s toothbrush comes out.

Just like ours, dogs’ teeth benefit from daily brushing to help reduce plaque and tartar buildup and support healthy teeth and gums.

If daily brushing isn’t part of your routine yet, start slowly and work up to it. Use a toothbrush made for dogs and dog-safe toothpaste (never human toothpaste), and make it a positive experience with plenty of praise.

Think of teeth brushing at the groomer as a little extra help, not a replacement for brushing at home. 🐾💜

Your dog may not love the toothbrush... but their teeth will thank you!

MYTH: Short-haired dogs don’t really need professional grooming.

FACT: They absolutely benefit from it! 🐾

Short-haired pups may not get the same obvious tangles and mats as longer-haired breeds, but they still shed, collect dirt and oils, need nail care, and benefit from regular bathing and coat maintenance.

Professional grooming isn’t just about giving dogs a haircut. It’s about helping keep their skin, coat, nails, ears, and overall comfort in good shape.

So yes, even the short-haired pups deserve a spa day. 💜

A new month means cooler mornings, changing leaves, and plenty of tail wags ahead.

As we start making the transition from summer into fall, don’t forget that your dog’s coat is changing right along with the season.

Regular brushing at home can help keep loose fur, tangles, and mats under control between grooming appointments.
