The Health Wagon The Health Wagon’s mission is to provide compassionate, quality healthcare to the medically underserved people in the mountains of Appalachia.

Our organization was started 42 years ago when Sister Bernadette Kenny, a medical missionary from Massachusetts, came to Appalachia and began offering free medical care from the back of her donated Volkswagen Beetle. The locals relied on Kenny for basic medical needs- referring to her simply as ‘Sister Bernie” and the care she provided as “the Health Wagon.” Today, we proudly continue her legacy, operating from mobile units and stationary clinics throughout Southwest Virginia.

💙 Superhuman Day is a day to recognize and celebrate people with disabilities while challenging the idea that a disability defines what someone can achieve. It is an opportunity to promote inclusion, accessibility, independence, and respect for the unique strengths every person brings to our communities.

At the Health Wagon, we believe quality healthcare should be accessible, compassionate, and centered around the individual. Through primary care, preventive services, behavioral health, dental and vision care, medication assistance, mobile outreach, and connections to additional resources, our team works to help patients overcome barriers and receive the care they deserve.

Today, we celebrate determination, adaptability, talent, and achievement while remembering that people with disabilities shouldn't have to be “superhuman” to be valued, included, or supported. From healthcare workers and first responders to teachers, miners, small business owners, caregivers, service workers, and countless others, every contribution helps strengthen the places we call home.

At the Health Wagon, we are especially grateful for the people of Appalachia whose hard work and resilience have shaped our region for generations. We also recognize that good health is essential for working, caring for family, and enjoying the life you've worked so hard to build. 🩺❤️ Lee County Healthy Day is coming September 24 & 25! The Health Wagon is bringing two days of FREE healthcare services and community resources to Pennington Gap, with something for the whole family!

📅 Thursday, September 24 & Friday, September 25, 2026
⏰ Registration begins at 8:30 AM
📍 Leeman Field RV Park and Campground (335 Fairgrounds Rd., Pennington Gap, VA)

Patients can receive a variety of FREE medical, vision, and dental services, including medical exams, PAPs, limited labs, chest and general X-rays, EKGs, hearing screenings, sports physicals, joint injections, colon cancer screenings, dental exams, extractions, cleanings, and more. Ultrasounds, echocardiograms, and vision screenings are available by appointment only.

And there's more! Families can also receive FREE food boxes, giveaways and hygiene items, brand-new clothing, and cleaning supplies while supplies last. Medicaid eligibility and enrollment assistance will also be available.

🧠💙 National Shrink Day is a lighthearted observance with an important message: caring for your mental health matters. The term “shrink” has long been used informally for psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health professionals, but behind the nickname are dedicated professionals who help people navigate stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and other challenges.

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:11

At the Health Wagon, we believe mental health deserves the same attention, compassion, and care as physical health. Through behavioral health services, psychiatric care, mental health screenings, counseling resources, primary care, and connections to additional support, our team works to help patients care for their whole selves.

Today is a great opportunity to thank the mental health professionals who listen, support, encourage, and help people find a path forward. It's also a reminder that you don't have to wait until you're in crisis to talk to someone. Taking care of your mind is part of taking care of your health. 💙
