Postpartum symptoms and thyroid symptoms can look surprisingly similar.

Postpartum thyroiditis is an inflammatory thyroid condition that can occur within the first year after childbirth.

Some women initially experience symptoms associated with an overactive thyroid, such as a racing heart, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and weight loss. Later, symptoms associated with an underactive thyroid; including fatigue, weight gain, low mood, and hair loss may occur.

Because many of these symptoms can also happen during the postpartum period for other reasons, thyroid dysfunction can sometimes be overlooked.

Are your perimenopause symptoms actually related to your thyroid?

Perimenopause and thyroid dysfunction can cause many of the same symptoms, including fatigue, weight changes, hair loss, brain fog, sleep disruption, and mood changes

In this video, Dr. Jen explains why evaluating thyroid function and s*x hormones together may be important during perimenopause, and why a TSH test alone may not provide the complete picture.\

She also discusses free T3, free T4, thyroid antibodies, nutrient status, stress, inflammation, and overall hormone balance.

Have you heard of NDT thyroid medication?

Natural Desiccated Thyroid, or NDT, is a thyroid medication made from desiccated pig thyroid. Unlike T4-only medications, NDT contains both T4 and T3.

In this video, Dr. Jen explains what NDT is, how the T4-to-T3 ratio works, and why some people who don't feel well on T4-only medication may want to discuss other thyroid medication options with their healthcare provider.

NDT is not appropriate for everyone, and thyroid medications should never be stopped or changed without guidance from the prescribing clinician.

Hyperthyroidism and Graves disease are related, but they are not exactly the same thing.โšก

Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid produces too much thyroid hormone. Graves disease is an autoimmune condition in which antibodies stimulate the thyroid and can cause it to become overactive.

Symptoms may include rapid heart rate, anxiety, unexplained weight loss, heat intolerance, tremors, and sometimes eye changes. ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ

Treatment may include antithyroid medications, radioactive iodine, or surgery depending on the situation.

Some people also choose to explore factors that may influence immune health, including chronic stress, nutrient status, infections, gut health, and lifestyle factors.๐ŸŒฟโœจ

These approaches are supportive and should be used alongside appropriate medical care, not as a replacement for it.

Have you ever been told you have a thyroid nodule?

Thyroid nodules are common, especially in women and as we age. Most are benign, but they still require appropriate evaluation.๐Ÿ”

Standard care may include ultrasound monitoring and, depending on the noduleโ€™s size and appearance, a biopsy.

In this video, Dr. Jen explains what thyroid nodules are and why some people also explore the broader thyroid environment, including iodine and selenium status, autoimmune activity, inflammation, and overall thyroid health๐ŸŒฟ

The goal is not to replace appropriate medical monitoring, but to understand the full picture.

Could changing estrogen levels be part of the thyroid picture?

Estrogen can increase thyroid-binding globulin, or TBG, the protein that carries thyroid hormones in the blood. Changes in TBG can affect how thyroid hormones circulate and may be particularly relevant during pregnancy, perimenopause, hormonal contraception, or estrogen therapy.

That is why thyroid symptoms and hormone changes sometimes need to be evaluated together rather than looking at one system in isolation.

In this video, Dr. Jen explains the estrogen and thyroid connection and why a broader evaluation may include thyroid labs, hormone balance, nutrition, gut health, liver function, stress, and lifestyle factors.๐ŸŒฟโœจ

Should you avoid broccoli and kale if you have thyroid problems? ๐Ÿฅฆ

This is one of those thyroid nutrition topics that has created a lot of unnecessary confusion.

Cruciferous vegetables contain compounds commonly referred to as goitrogens. At very high intakes, particularly when iodine status is inadequate, they can interfere with normal thyroid processes.

That does not mean a normal serving of broccoli, kale, cabbage, or Brussels sprouts is automatically harmful to your thyroid.

These foods also provide fiber, sulforaphane, glucosinolates, vitamins, minerals, and many other beneficial nutrients. Cooking cruciferous vegetables can reduce their goitrogenic activity even further.

In this video, Dr. Jen explains why thyroid nutrition should focus on the whole person and the overall diet rather than creating fear around individual healthy foods.

Can thyroid dysfunction improve when the underlying contributors are identified and addressed?

For some people, thyroid health can change significantly over time.

A comprehensive approach may include looking at autoimmune activity, nutrient deficiencies, gut health, chronic stress, thyroid hormone conversion, environmental exposures, and hormone balance.

In this video, Dr. Jen explains what a root-cause thyroid approach can look like and why a full thyroid evaluation may reveal much more than a TSH level alone.
