Let’s compare apples to apples. At the end of SD fiscal year 2022, there were approximately 1700 medical cannabis patients. (That’s when the program had just started, and was at the end of the FISCAL year, not the calendar year.) The article states that at the end o FY 2022, there were 61 patients who were certified to grow. So at the end of FY 2022, 3.59% of medical cannabis patients were able to grow. At the end of FY 2026 there were 19,383 patients & 715 growers, or 3.69% of patients that are growing.

Sounds to me like we are splitting hairs, making mountains out of molehills…..or creating solutions for problems that don’t exist.

A state Health Department official said home cultivation licenses for medical ma*****na have grown by more than 1,000% in four years.

This is unfortunate, because as a psychiatric provider, I am finding that cannabis treats PTSD far better than any medication I have prescribed in the past 20 years….and it is safer!

I wish we could use cannabis for Alzheimer’s patients in long term care facilities, as it treats the agitation associated with Alzheimer’s much more effectively and is safer than many of the pharmaceuticals that are used! Hopefully rescheduling will address some of these issues.

This is a HUGE problem. The DEA is only allowing the anti-cannabis faction to testify in regard to de-scheduling cannabis. This is very problematic & likely a sign of what’s to come.

🚨 The DEA is moving forward with a hearing on the legal status of ma*****na, but the people most affected by federal cannabis policy won't be in the room.

The federal government cannot claim to be conducting a balanced review while intentionally excluding the voices of those most directly impacted by these policies.

BIG NEWS! Outside of medical issues, the question I get asked the most in regard to medical cannabis is "can I own guns if I get my medical card?" The answer is now officiallly YES!

The US Supreme Court gave a unanimous ruling this morning, stating that "the government can’t criminally prosecute a man for possessing a firearm simply because he regularly smoked ma*****na." The Supreme Court felt that ma*****na use was different than being a "habitual drunkard".

Although this raises the bar for future prosecutions, it leaves the door open for defendants to still be convicted if the government can prove they are using illegal drugs at the time they are found with a gun. Therefore, if you are a gun owner and you use ma*****na, it is in your best interest to get your medical card if you legally are able to do so.

As someone who supports both responsible cannabis use and the Second Amendment, I view this decision positively. That said, rights are accompanied by responsibilities. Just as we recognize that alcohol and fi****ms are a dangerous combination, the same principle should apply to ma*****na.

Safety should remain the top priority whenever fi****ms are involved—whether you're target shooting, hunting pheasants, or keeping a firearm at home. We can protect our rights while also emphasizing personal responsibility, safe firearm handling, and accountability.
