When inflammation is elevated, it can interfere with the way your cells respond to insulin- the hormone responsible for helping move glucose from your bloodstream into your cells.

When those cells become less responsive to insulin, your body may compensate by producing more of it. Over time, this can contribute to insulin resistance and higher blood sugar levels.

And that’s why simply saying “eat less sugar” doesn’t always tell the whole story.

We want to ask deeper questions:

→ What may be contributing to inflammation?
→ How is your body responding to insulin?
→ What do your nutrition, sleep, stress, activity, and metabolic health look like?
→ Are there other factors making blood sugar regulation more difficult?

Blood sugar is a signal. The goal is to understand what may be driving that signal—not just focus on the number.

A healthier metabolism starts with understanding the bigger picture.

🤔 Considering a new diet? Read this first 👇🏼

You can follow the “perfect” diet and still not feel your best if you’re not addressing what’s actually happening inside your body. 🥗

The truth is, there isn’t one diet that works for everyone.

Before we start cutting foods, counting macros, or jumping onto the latest nutrition trend, we need to evaluate the body first.

Why?

Because stubborn weight may be influenced by things like:
✨ Gut function
✨ Blood sugar regulation
✨ Thyroid function
✨ Hormonal balance
✨ Nutrient deficiencies
✨ Inflammation
✨ Stress and nervous system function

If we don’t understand what your body needs, we’re just guessing.

Your diet should support what your body needs, not simply follow what worked for a stranger on the Internet.

That’s why a functional approach starts with evaluation, history, and appropriate testing, then uses that information to build a nutrition plan around you.

As a functional medicine doctor, the first step I’d recommend to anyone wanting to get healthier is to start by understanding YOUR body.

It’s easy to jump straight into the trends of new diets, supplements, or wellness devices.

👉🏼But what works for someone else may not work for YOU.

Why? Because your body is unique, and should be given personalized care.

👉🏼Before you get diagnosed by the internet and try to fix your symptoms, start by asking why they’re happening in the first place.

How? Functional medicine looks at the full picture- your symptoms, your story, your lifestyle, and most importantly…your TESTING.

💡Getting healthy shouldn’t be about guessing what your body needs.

So… my biggest recommendation? Get answers.

Feeling tired all the time? It might not be because you’re “getting older.” It could be because your cells aren’t making energy efficiently. ⚡

Most people think energy comes from coffee☕️

🧠Your body knows better.

Every single cell in your body runs on a molecule called ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP is often called the body’s “energy currency” because it’s what powers everything—from your heartbeat and brain function to muscle movement and hormone production.

So where does ATP come from?

Inside nearly every cell are tiny structures called mitochondria. Think of them as your body’s power plants. They take the nutrients from the food you eat and, with the help of oxygen, convert them into ATP.

When your mitochondria are working well, you feel:
✅ Energized
✅ Mentally sharp
✅ Physically resilient
✅ Able to recover well

But when ATP production is compromised, you may experience:
😴 Fatigue
🧠 Brain fog
💪 Poor exercise recovery
😫 Low motivation
🛌 Feeling exhausted even after a full night’s sleep

So what can affect your body’s ability to produce ATP?

• Nutrient deficiencies (B vitamins, magnesium, iron, CoQ10 and others)
• Poor gut health leading to reduced nutrient absorption
• Blood sugar imbalances
• Chronic inflammation
• Ongoing stress
• Poor sleep
• Lack of movement
• Mitochondrial dysfunction

That’s why simply drinking more caffeine often doesn’t solve the problem. Caffeine can make you feel more alert temporarily, but it doesn’t necessarily improve how much energy your cells are actually producing.

Real energy starts at the cellular level.

Instead of asking, “How can I get more energy?”

Start asking, “Why aren’t my cells making enough?”

If you need multiple cups of coffee to get through a day, it could mean you’re not producing enough natural energy, and instead running on stimulants ☕️⚡️

Here are a few of the biggest factors that determine whether you’re making energy or borrowing it:

🩸 Iron
Iron isn’t just about anemia. It’s essential for carrying oxygen to your cells, and oxygen is required for your mitochondria to produce ATP. Even if you’re not technically anemic, low iron stores may contribute to fatigue, brain fog, poor exercise tolerance, and feeling drained.

⚡ Minerals
Minerals like magnesium, zinc, selenium, potassium, and copper are involved in hundreds of enzymatic reactions- including the ones that produce cellular energy. If you’re deficient, your body’s “energy factories” simply can’t work as efficiently.

🦋 Your Thyroid
Think of your thyroid as the body’s metabolic thermostat. Thyroid hormones help regulate how quickly your cells convert nutrients into usable energy. When thyroid function is impaired, everything can slow down- including your metabolism, energy levels, and recovery.

🦠 Your Gut
None of the nutrients above matter if you can’t absorb them!
Your gut is responsible for breaking down food and absorbing the vitamins and minerals needed to make energy. If digestion is compromised, inflammation is present, or the gut microbiome is out of balance, your body may struggle to get the raw materials it needs to fuel your cells.

😴 Stress & Sleep
Chronic stress and poor sleep don’t just make you feel tired- they can impair recovery, increase inflammation, disrupt hormones, and place additional demands on your body’s energy production.

Coffee can temporarily increase alertness, but it doesn’t replace missing nutrients, improve gut absorption, or correct thyroid dysfunction.

Stop borrowing energy from tomorrow. Start giving your body what it needs to create energy today.
