I have the most beautiful basil growing this year. I've grown this variety in the past, but it hasn't been this prolific and beautiful. It's called Purple Ball Basil. I got the seeds from Baker Creek seeds if you want to grow some yourself. I decided this would make a gorgeous Basil infused oil with a great taste, so I've started a batch with organic sunflower oil. My first thought was to use olive oil, but I wanted the Basil to stand out. You'll notice I have covered the jar with muslin instead of sealing it tight. This allows moisture from the basil to escape which prevents mold from forming. It will be ready in four to six weeks. I'm looking forward to this batch !

The heat this Summer seems unending. It's the perfect time to make oils and salves for the coming fall and winter. I have Lemon lip balm, Rose hip oil, Painease oil for oil and salves, Lavender oil, Awesome oil for salve and Skin Heal oil for salve. The oils infuse for four to six weeks before they are ready to strain and bottle.
While I no longer work outdoor Summer markets I still have all the goodies you've come to know available for you. Message me here or give me a call and I can set up an order invoice and delivery for you.

I wasn't sure there would be much wild sage to collect for smudge sticks and door amulets this year. The hot and dry weather has been brutal on plants. I do have wild sage that planted itself near my gardens so I watered it when watering the gardens. They have grown well and I harvested some yesterday. Even when wildcrafting on my own land I always leave at least half of the plant to flower and go to seed. And I never cut a plant to the ground until the growing season is over. It's important for sustainabiity.

My St Johns Wort oil is finished. It was a really good batch this year even though I stopped collecting flowers when the smoke from the Aspen Acres fire reached us out here on the plains. I was able to strain off 20 ounces of potent deep red oil. I have found through personal experrience that St Johns Wort oil works great on relieving nerve and muscle pain. It also heals burns quickly. You must remember to let the burn cool by running cool (not cold) water over it before adding the oil or it will hold the heat in. I'll have this oil avaialbe in roll-on bottles and 2 ounce bottles.

Last year I planted a variety of Greek Mullein. It's blooming now and I'm in love with this Mullein. It still has the nice fuzzy leaves, but they are a little narrower and longer. The flowers are impressive. Beautiful large flowers blooming in groups. I can't help but wonder if these will cross pollinate with our native Mullein and produce an even different looking flower. I always let the Mullein plants go to seed at the end of the season. It will be interesting to see what blossoms look like in two years.

While working in the garden without gloves I was reminded of a solution to stop the sting of Stinging Nettles. Yellow Dock leaves! Just rub the leaves on the spot and the stinging goes away.

Can you tell what I've been doing? I've been collectng St Johns Wort flowers! It's so magical picking the bright yellow flowers that turn your fingers and the oil or tincture you make into a redish purple. The only time you can make a good potent oil or tincture from St Johns Wort is when the plants are in bloom. Dried flowers don't give you the same results. So while the plants are in bloom I collect these precious petals everyday and add them to organic sunflower oil or a good vodka for infused oils and tinctures.
Lately I've been using the St Johns Wort oil on knots in my shoulders and neck. It does offer some relief from pain as the knots reduce iin size. I reapply the oil as needed.
