✉️ The Root of the Holy Ghost: Celebrating Michaelmas with Angelica 🌿✨

Today, September 29, the Church celebrates the beautiful and historic Feast of the Three Archangels—Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael (traditionally known as Michaelmas)!

On this great feast day, we honor the heavenly messengers and protectors God sends to guide us. In the rich history of Catholic monastic herbalism, natural plants were appreciated as purposeful gifts from God, each reflecting a bit of His divine design.

To honor this holy day, let’s look at a plant with a legendary history in the Church: Angelica Root (Angelica archangelica).

Known for centuries as the "Herb of the Angels" or the "Root of the Holy Ghost," medieval tradition tells us that an angel originally revealed this plant's unique strengths to a monk during a time of widespread illness to serve as a tonic for strength and vitality.

Because it is an incredibly robust, deeply grounding, and aromatic root, it is beautifully tied to Archangel Gabriel—the divine messenger who brings heavenly strength and tidings of comfort and hope. In old monastery gardens, angelica was prized for its ability to bring a powerful, comforting warmth to the body, support cold-weather vitality, and gently ease digestion.

☕ St. Gabriel’s Morning Strength Decoction

Unlike delicate leaves, tough roots like angelica need to be simmered (a decoction) rather than just steeped to release their full, earthy, and sweet-bitter goodness.

What you need:

• 1 teaspoon of dried organic Angelica Root 🌿
• 1.5 cups of water 💧
• A slice of orange or a cinnamon stick (optional, for a festive autumn flavor) 🍊🍂

How to prepare:
1. Combine the angelica root and water in a small saucepan.
2. Bring to a boil, then immediately turn the heat down to low, cover the pot, and let it gently simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.
3. Strain into your favorite mug.

Because it has a deeply grounding, bittersweet flavor, it is the perfect beverage to enjoy while journaling, praying, or planning your week. As you sip this warming cup, take a moment to ask for the powerful intercession of all three heavenly guides:

• Ask St. Gabriel for the strength to hear God’s voice clearly and to communicate with kindness and courage.

• Cry out to St. Michael to surround your home, your family, and your business with his holy shield of protection.

• Petition St. Raphael, the angel of health, to bring his comforting, restorative healing to any physical or emotional ailments you are carrying today.

“Holy Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, protect us, heal us, and guide us today!” 🙌✨

There is a hidden mercy in the green things of the earth, where God has woven memory into fragrance. When the mind is heavy with anxiety, the bright, sweet scent of lemon balm rises like a gentle prayer, whispering to the weary soul to pray, hope, and don't worry. In its citrus sweetness, the tension of the day dissolves, reminding us that just as the bruised leaf releases its finest balm, our deepest peace is found when we surrender our worries into the hands of the Creator.

🍋🌿✨Today is the Feast Day of St. Padre Pio, the beloved patron saint of stress relief and healing. If you are starting to feel those early autumn changes—where the sky gets a bit heavier and the fall blues start creeping in with the cooler air— this is your gentle reminder to take a deep breath. It’s completely natural to feel that seasonal shift in your spirit.

To help navigate this day, I am adding a few drops of Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) essential oil to my wrists. In traditional monastic medicine, the bright, uplifting aroma of lemon balm has been used for centuries to physically lower cortisol, calm a racing heart, and lift a fatigued spirit.

Taking a moment to breathe it in is the ultimate "pray, hope, and don't worry", specifically renowned for chasing away seasonal melancholy and calming my nerves for the day ahead.

God didn't just give us plants for food—He gave them to us to soothe our nerves, bring back peaceful memories, and remind us of His constant care even as the seasons turn. St. Padre Pio, pray for us today!

Lord, we surrender our worries and our changing seasons into Your hands.
🙏✝️

✨ A quick note on herbal safety: Since pure, organic essential oils are incredibly powerful and concentrated, always remember to dilute them before applying them to your skin! I mix a drop or two of my lemon balm essential oil with a small splash of a nourishing carrier oil (like jojoba, sweet almond, or organic olive oil) before rubbing it on my wrists. Keep it away from your eyes, and if you are pregnant, nursing, or have sensitive skin, always do a quick patch test first! 🌿

I must have slept completely wrong last night—twisted and tense. My neck has been in absolute pain all day, but with how busy things have been, I just kept putting off taking care of it. Finally back home and ready for bed, I massaged my neck with my homemade arnica warming salve. The relief is instant. It warms the muscle right up, and I can literally feel it soothing my nerves. 🌿

✨I am so incredibly thankful for the natural remedies God has packed into creation to help our bodies heal. I wanted to share exactly why this specific blend works so fast to knock out deep muscle pain and tension:

🌱 Arnica-Infused Olive Oil: Arnica is the ultimate champion for physical trauma, bruising, and deep tissue aches. Combined with olive oil—which in Catholic tradition represents strength, gladness, and scriptural anointing—it absorbs deeply to calm inflammation right at the source.

💨 Camphor Essential Oil: This provides that immediate, refreshing "cooling" sensation. It acts as a natural counter-irritant, lightly numbing the sharp nerve pain so your neck can finally relax.

🌶️ Cayenne Pepper: Cayenne contains a powerful compound called capsaicin. It works on a deep neurological level to temporarily de-activate the pain signals firing from your nerves, giving tight muscles a true chance to let go.

🔥 Black Pepper & Cinnamon Essential Oils: This is where the magic happens. These are fierce circulatory stimulants. Together, they drive deep, therapeutic heat right into the muscle tissue, bringing fresh, oxygenated blood rushing in to break up stubborn knots and stiffness
🐝 Beeswax & Shea Butter: These form the luxurious, moisturizing base. In monastic traditions, bees are a symbol of diligence and divine grace. Together, they create a smooth glide perfect for massaging tight knots and locking the active oils into your skin all night.Turning a painful day into an evening of relief and gratitude.

"Glance at the sun. See the moon and the stars. Gaze at the beauty of earth’s greenings... What delight God gives to humankind with all these things." — St. Hildegard of Bingen ✝️🙏

Yesterday we celebrated a Doctor of the Church, and today we celebrate "The Flying Friar"

I first heard of St. Joseph of Cupertino when I was in high-school. He inspired me a lot for being NOT the smartest student ever, but Never giving up. He did try his best. But what he lacked in academics, he had in spirituality.
He struggled severely with his studies and exams, due to learning difficulties, but he was a gentle, humble, Franciscan Friar.

Today during his feast day, if you are a student struggling to focus I reccomend to you:

Rosemary (salvia rosmarinus)
Rosemary has been associated with memory since ancient times. Modern research shows that sniffing Rosemary essential oil, or infusing Rosemary for a tea, can actually improve cognitive performance and speed up memory retention by increasing blood flow to the brain!

St. Joseph of Cupertino is the patron saint of students, but since he used to literally levitate during intense moments of prayer he is also the patron saint of aviators, pilots and air travelers.

If you translate his patronage of "flight" into modern herbalism, these two roots and leaves are the premier natural remedies for motion sickness, vertigo, and inner-ear imbalance caused by flying or travel: ginger and peppermint!!

St. Joseph of Cupertino, pray for us!

Resting in His presence, body and soul. 🤍

✨After spending a beautiful hour in Adoration today and letting the Lord relieve the soreness of my soul, I came home ready to tend to a very sore body. My muscles were completely exhausted, and I couldn't wait to run a soothing foot soak.
But as I opened the cabinet, I discovered a minor household crisis: I was completely out of Epsom salt!
Instead of getting frustrated, I took a moment to thank God for the abundance in my apothecary cabinets and got to work being a resourceful steward. I ended up crafting a makeshift "emergency" soak that worked so well, I think St. Fiacre would approve.

Here is the recovery blend I put together:
Sea Salt: For a mineral-rich, grounding base to help draw out physical tension.
Magnesium Oil: To deliver that deeply relaxing magnesium boost my muscles were craving since I lacked the Epsom salts.
Warming Arnica Salve Marc: I saved the leftover herbal pulp (the marc) from my last batch of homemade arnica infusion.
Even though it was already strained, it still held onto plenty of residual, warming, ache-relieving properties perfect for a hot bath. As I let my feet soak for 20 minutes, I was struck by the beauty of God's design. Just as He pours His grace into the broken, worn-out spaces of our souls during Adoration, He also provides simple, natural remedies to comfort our physical bodies.
Even the leftover scraps of our herbal work—like this arnica marc—have a purpose and a blessing to offer when we get creative.
I left the couch feeling completely renewed, inside and out. 🌿✨

St. Hildegard’s Secret to a Joyful Heart:

Traditional Fennel Tea 🌿

✨On this Feast of St. Hildegard von Bingen, we are looking directly to her absolute favorite, all-purpose garden remedy: Fennel. Long before modern science confirmed fennel’s incredible benefits for digestion and bloating, this 12th-century Doctor of the Church wrote about how God designed this humble plant to bring warmth and happiness to the human body. In her classic medical text, Physica, St. Hildegard noted:

"In whatever way it is eaten, it makes the human being joyful, gives a pleasant warmth, good sweat, and good digestion."

If you are feeling sluggish, heavy, or just need a comforting, drink to wind down your evening, to receive St. Hildegard's traditional fennel tea recipe right in your inbox, comment FENNEL!!
