Our children. Our families. Our future—on the chopping block.

This week, the Michigan House passed a budget proposal that zeroes out funding for the Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS)—on paper. That means essential supports for Medicaid waivers, mental health care, behavioral services, and programs for those with developmental disabilities and complex needs are being erased in the name of politics.

This is not federal. This is MICHIGAN. This is happening in our own backyard.

As a provider who walks beside families every day—who sees the real progress, the real struggle, and the real hope built through services like Music, Art, and Recreational Therapy—this is nothing short of devastating.

We cannot let this stand.
We cannot let our most vulnerable be sacrificed in silence.

This budget proposal is a wake-up call. And we need to act.

Excessive treatment may reduce its effectiveness and cause tension and anxiety, both of which could lead to a loss of rapport and trust with the therapist.

This may result in needing to start over with a new treatment, an impact on daily life, or therapy-related trauma.

Therefore, therapy only comes from professionals. A doctor watches the dosing, tailors it to the individual, and adapts it over time. Credentialed therapists do just that with treatment.

Meet Renee Brinn, one of our dedicated music therapists!

Where do you get your experience?
I completed my internship at Woodsedge Learning Center in Portage, Michigan, where I worked with kids, adolescents, and young adults who had developmental disabilities. Before working at ATS, I had a contract position working with individuals in rehabilitation centers who had traumatic brain injury.

What is special to you about this work?
My favorite thing about music therapy is giving the people I work with the opportunity to express themselves through music. I love learning about different artists and different genres; everyone has a different experience of music. I love using their music experience to work on skills they struggle with. It is always motivating to see an individual come to life through music.

Bonus Question:
What do you do when you’re not practicing therapy?
When I’m not doing therapy or practicing, I like to go on walks, I go to Zumba classes, I like cooking and making coffee drinks, or I spend time with my husband and cat.

With a background in working with individuals with developmental disabilities and traumatic brain injuries, Renee brings a wealth of experience and passion to our team. She loves helping clients express themselves through music and witnessing their growth and progress. We are so grateful to have her on board!
