On December 7th, 1941, the USS Oklahoma rolled beneath the waters of Pearl Harbor.

As chaos spread and men scrambled through smoke, oil, and darkness, Father Aloysius Schmitt found a small porthole where sailors could escape the sinking ship.

One by one, he pushed young men through to safety.

When they begged him to come too, he refused.

“There’s one more man down here.”

Then another.

And another.

Until there was no time left.

Father Schmitt died beneath the ship so others could see home again.

Not for medals.
Not for headlines.
Just because love demanded it.

Memorial Day is more than flags and cookouts. It is a reminder that freedom has always rested on ordinary people willing to give extraordinary things for others.
