These are a few things I find myself explaining to clients every day, whether in person or over the phone, but they’re always worth repeating before getting pierced!
A piercing can look healed before it actually is.
The outside can look completely normal while the tissue inside is still healing. Less swelling & tenderness are positive signs, but they do not mean fully healed. This is why healing timelines matter & changing jewelry too early can cause unnecessary irritation.
More cleaning does not mean faster healing.
Overcleaning, scrubbing & using unnecessary products irritate healing tissue rather than help it. Routine aftercare is simple: sterile saline & clean running water. The goal is to keep the area clean without constantly disturbing the piercing.
Healing problems don’t automatically mean rejection.
Bumps, redness, swelling & tenderness can result from irritation, pressure, friction or unsuitable jewelry. Rejection specifically involves the body gradually pushing jewelry toward the surface. Most issues require different approaches, so persistent symptoms should be assessed rather than automatically treated.
Downsizing is apart of the healing process.
Initial jewelry needs room for swelling, but once that swelling subsides, excess length can cause movement, snagging & irritation. Downsizing at the appropriate time helps your jewelry fit better as healing progresses.
Getting pierced is only the beginning! Proper placement, appropriate jewelry, followups & consistent aftercare all contribute to the healing process. You cannot rush your body’s healing process, but you can avoid many of the things that make it unnecessarily difficult!
