DAY 18 — What Happens at an Ar**la Consultation?
Walking into an appointment for something this personal can feel intimidating, so let's remove some of the mystery.
Your appointment is where we TALK. What do you want? What don't you want? Are we recreating one ar**la or both? What size, placement and overall appearance feel right to you?

We'll look at the skin and existing scars, discuss realistic expectations, talk about color and design, and answer your questions.
Then comes something I take very seriously: Mapping.
I'm not going to surprise you with an ar**la you haven't seen mapped first. We work together. And if something doesn't look right to YOU during mapping? Tell me. You will never hurt my feelings by communicating about YOUR body. I would much rather spend additional time making adjustments before tattooing than have someone stay quiet because they're afraid of offending me. This is your body. You get a voice in the process.

DAY 17 — To the Caregivers. Today isn't for the patient. It's for the person sitting beside them. 💕

The spouse who went to appointments. The parent who tried to stay strong. The friend who answered the phone at 2 AM. The person driving to treatments, picking up medications, making dinner, helping with kids, sitting in waiting rooms, researching things they never imagined they'd need to understand...

The caregiver. Cancer happens to one person's body, but its impact can reach an entire family. And sometimes the person taking care of everyone else forgets that they're allowed to be scared, tired, angry or overwhelmed too. So today, I'm checking on you. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for sitting beside someone when you couldn't fix what was happening. Thank you for loving them through it.

And please remember that caregivers need care, too. 🎀

DAY 16 — Men Get Breast Cancer Too
Breast cancer isn't exclusively a women's health issue. Men can develop breast cancer too. And because the conversation surrounding breast cancer so often focuses on women, it's important that men aren't left out of awareness and education. Men have breast tissue. Men can notice breast changes. Men can be diagnosed with breast cancer.

So if you're a man reading this or there's a man you love breast health isn't something that should automatically be dismissed because “breast cancer happens to women.”
Awareness should include everyone who can be affected.
And yes, if a man undergoes treatment or surgery that results in the loss or alteration of an ar**la, restorative tattooing can be relevant to him too.

Breast cancer doesn't belong to one gender. Neither should awareness.

DAY 15 — Screening Is an Appointment Worth Keeping
Today I want to talk about something that has absolutely nothing to do with booking an appointment with me. Keeping up with your breast health. Life gets BUSY. Work. Kids. Family. Appointments. Bills. Responsibilities. Everybody needing something from you.

And women can become very good at putting themselves at the bottom of their own list. Please don't let your health permanently live there.

Talk with your healthcare provider about what breast cancer screening is appropriate for your age, personal history and individual risk. And if you've been putting off a recommended screening because life keeps getting in the way... Consider this your reminder.
You take care of everybody else. You deserve to take care of you, too.

DAY 14 — No Two Ar**las Are the Same. And some need to look PIERCED.

Meet Frankie’s ni**le tattoo. Yes, it's on his leg. Yes, he wanted it to look pierced. And OF COURSE Frankie had to ask me to try something I'd never done before. Because apparently just asking me to tattoo a realistic ni**le on his leg wasn't enough. 😂

I've practiced creating realistic ar**las in all kinds of different ways, but I had never been asked to make one look pierced before.
So... challenge accepted.

But there's actually an educational reason I'm sharing this one during my 31 Days of Breast Cancer Awareness. When I'm creating a realistic 3D ar**la, realism doesn't mean creating the same ni**le and ar**la over and over again. Real bodies don't work that way. Different shapes. Different sizes. Different colors. Different undertones. Different textures. Different details. And apparently... different accessories.

Frankie's was obviously created for fun, but it gave me another opportunity to practice something that's incredibly important in my paramedical work: Creating dimension on flat skin. Making your eyes believe they're seeing something three dimensional. And THAT is one of my favorite parts of this art.

For someone receiving 3D ar**la restoration after breast surgery or reconstruction, I'm not trying to give everyone my version of the “perfect” ar**la. I'm creating something individualized for their body, their skin, their anatomy, and their preferences. Frankie just happened to take the “preferences” part to a whole new level and test me outside of my comfort level. No two bodies are exactly alike.
No two ar**las are exactly alike. And my work shouldn't be either.

🩷💚🩵 OCTOBER 13 — METASTATIC BREAST CANCER AWARENESS DAY

Today I want to make space for a part of the breast cancer conversation that deserves our attention. Metastatic breast cancer. Metastatic breast cancer, also called Stage 4 breast cancer, occurs when breast cancer has spread beyond the breast to other areas of the body. For people living with metastatic breast cancer, there isn't necessarily a moment when cancer simply becomes something in the past.

Treatment and monitoring may continue as part of their lives. So today isn't about my business. It isn't about booking an appointment. And it isn't about selling anything.

Today is about recognizing the people living with metastatic breast cancer, honoring those we've lost, supporting the families and caregivers walking beside them, and continuing to educate ourselves.

Because Breast Cancer Awareness Month needs to include ALL breast cancer stories. Including the difficult ones. Your story matters. 🩷💚🩵

🎀 DAY 12: TATTOOING CAN BE MORE THAN DECORATIVE 🎀

When most people hear the word tattoo, they think artwork. Flowers. Names. Sleeves. Memorial pieces. But tattooing can also be used in a completely different way. Paramedical tattooing. One of the services closest to my heart is 3D ar**la restoration following breast surgery or reconstruction.

Instead of creating artwork that's SUPPOSED to look like a tattoo, I'm using tattooing techniques to create something designed to look like it naturally belongs on the body. That's such an incredible concept to me. The machine may be similar. The pigment may be going into the skin. But the PURPOSE can be completely different. Sometimes tattooing is self-expression. Sometimes it's art. Sometimes it's a memory. And sometimes, it's creating the illusion of something that used to be there. That's why I love this side of tattooing so much.
