Celebrating our 13th anniversary! Life is better together! “Two is better than one.” Grateful for you, Honey! 💕

And a gratitude husband for the husband who keeps the house running for those days when I leave for a birth and don’t know when I’ll be returning. I have had more than 48+ hour birth. 😅💕

A little reminder for breastfeeding families: Vitamin D matters too!

Breast milk is an incredible source of nutrition for babies, but it is naturally low in vitamin D. Because vitamin D is important for healthy bone growth and development, many pediatric organizations including American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that exclusively or mostly breastfed babies receive a daily vitamin D supplement, starting soon after birth.

As a doula, I don't prescribe supplements or give medical advice, but I do like to remind families about topics they may want to discuss with their baby's doctor. Vitamin D is one of those simple conversations that can sometimes be overlooked in the busy newborn days.

If you're breastfeeding your baby, it can be helpful to ask your doctor:
✨ Does my baby need a vitamin D supplement?
✨ When should we start?
✨ How much is recommended for my baby?

Every family is different, so your baby's doctor can help you decide what's best for your little one.

Have you heard about vitamin D supplementation before your baby was born, or was it something you learned afterward? I'd love to hear your experience!

One thing I’ve learned as a doula in Vietnam is that trust is built birth by birth.

I’m incredibly grateful for the physicians, nurses, midwives, and maternity care team at Hoan My Hospital. Every conversation, every interaction, every hand held, and every opportunity to support a family alongside the healthcare team helps build that trust.

This birth reminded me that collaboration is about consistently making the birth experience better for mothers while supporting the work of the healthcare team. Working as one connected team is my absolute favorite.

And getting to support this family in English and interpreting into Vietnamese language throughout their labor? That felt like a dream come true. 💕

I’m grateful to witness what can happen when everyone shares the same goal: a safe, supported, and positive birth.

Here’s to many more births built on trust, teamwork, and compassionate care. 🤍

✨ I’d love to hear from you:
What made you feel the most supported during your birth?

📩 If you’re navigating pregnancy or planning to give birth in Vietnam, I’d love to support you through birth education, labor support, postpartum care, and lactation guidance.

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.”
— Psalm 121:1–2

During labor, I often hear mothers cry out in deep surrender. In moments when strength feels exhausted, when the next contraction seems impossible, or when plans unexpectedly change, those deep cries become heartfelt prayers.
Psalm 121 reminds us that our help comes from the Lord—not because He always removes the difficulty, but because He is present within it. He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the Creator of both mother and baby. He is the One who formed this new life in the womb and the One who faithfully sustains life with every breath.
As you prepare for birth, don’t be afraid to cry out to Him. Bring Him your fears, your pain, your questions, and your hopes. If you are in the throes of motherhood, don’t be afraid to bring him your hardest questions, deepest desires, or your unmet expectations. Ask Him for strength when yours is gone, for wisdom when decisions need to be made, for peace when anxiety rises, and for His presence to fill the birth room, your bedroom, or your home.
The God who knit your baby together hears every whispered prayer, every tear, and every deepest cry. He is near. He is faithful. And whatever your birth journey holds, you do not walk through it alone.

If there is anything you are walking through that you want prayer for, let me know. I love to connect with my past mamas, current mamas or even a future mama!

I feel this on every level 🫠😆 I have both said it at a doula, and have experienced those thoughts as a mother.

But I lived through and wanted to do it again. again. And I’d do it again if I could. 😆

Things your midwife says in labor and what you actually hear:

"Just breathe through it. Blow out like you're blowing out a candle."

(Said while the baby is actively crowning. I am attempting to blow out a candle while what feels like a watermelon is exiting my bu****le. Breathing is not currently available to me.)

"Drop your shoulders and let everything from your head to your toes just loosen up."

(My insides are currently being squeezed in a mechanical vice. But sure. I'll just loosen up.)

"You're safe and you're doing such a great job."

(I am in fact not doing a great job. I am fairly certain I am dying. These feel like different things.)

"You CAN do this. You're almost there and the only way out now is through."

(At this point I have no choice. That's not encouragement, that's just math. And honestly? A little brutal.)

"This looks like early labor. The best thing you can do right now is rest."

(Said as my midwife tucked me into my own bed and handed me sleepy herbs. I'm sorry. EARLY? This cannot be early. I refuse to accept early. Early is not possible right now.)

"You really need to try and eat something to keep your energy up for pushing."

(The thought of eating anything ever again is offensive to me. I have decided this baby is never coming out and food is no longer part of my life.)

"Why don't you snuggle up with your husband and get some oxytocin flowing to help pick up those contractions?"

(Ma'am. Have you seen me? I am a sweaty, leaking, enormous human who currently feels the opposite of romantic. My husband is also a little scared of me right now. Snuggling is not on the table.)

"Your body was made for this."

(Cool. My body and I are having a serious conversation after this is over.)

"Every contraction is bringing your baby closer."

(This is technically true and also completely unhelpful right now.)

"You're almost there."

(You have said this four times in the last two hours. We need to discuss what almost means.)

And then the baby arrives.

And suddenly every single thing we said was true.

You were safe. You did do a great job. You could do it. You were almost there.

Your body WAS made for this.

And it was worth every single second.

Without the option of bathtub during active labor in hospitals in Danang (and I’m guessing no shower as well), and most homes not having a bathtub for early labor, I have been thinking about how to make births more comfortable during that early labor (at home time) or active labor (moving home to hospital time). Knowing what you know about birth, what would you add to your home or the hospital to make it more comfortable?

I have been thinking about the possibility of getting a room at a local hotel with a nice bathtub so you can get into a bathtub during early labor.

Honestly the bathtub was so essential to my first labor and I have seen it so help for others.

Would you do it?

What other non-pharmaceutical ways would you add to help women be more comfortable during early and active labor?
