🚨 WHAT APPEARED TO BE ONLY SUPERFICIAL ABRASIONS AFTER A TRAFFIC ACCIDENT UNEXPECTEDLY REVEALED A RUPTURED BLADDER REQUIRING TIMELY EMERGENCY SURGERY

A motorcycle fall initially appeared to have caused only superficial abrasions. However, inside the abdominal cavity, the patient had sustained a complex bladder rupture with a tear measuring approximately 8 cm in length.

Recently, doctors at Phan Chau Trinh Hospital Medical University successfully performed emergency laparoscopic surgery on patient P.H.A., born in 1984 and residing in Da Nang, who sustained a rupture of the superior wall of the urinary bladder following a traffic accident.

🏥 FROM LOWER ABDOMINAL PAIN TO THE DISCOVERY OF AN INJURY REQUIRING EMERGENCY SURGERY

On August 10, 2026, the patient was admitted to the hospital following a motorcycle accident, presenting with lower abdominal pain, mild abdominal distension, and multiple superficial abrasions on the face, arms, and legs.

Given the possibility of multiple traumatic injuries, the doctors promptly conducted a systematic clinical examination and ordered the necessary diagnostic investigations. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed free fluid in the abdominal cavity, prompting an abdominal CT scan for further evaluation.

The CT scan showed a rupture of the superior wall of the urinary bladder accompanied by intraperitoneal fluid.

⚠️ This type of injury requires prompt diagnosis and management because urine and blood may leak into the abdominal cavity, increasing the risk of complications if treatment is delayed.

🔬 COMPLEX 8-CM BLADDER RUPTURE – SUCCESSFULLY MANAGED WITH LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY

Immediately after the diagnosis was established, the patient underwent multidisciplinary consultation, and emergency surgery was indicated.

Dr. Pham Van Uoc and the surgical team from the Department of Surgery performed laparoscopic repair of the ruptured bladder.

During surgery, the doctors identified a more complex injury than initially anticipated: a rupture of the superior bladder wall measuring approximately 8 cm in length, together with blood-stained fluid in the abdominal cavity and blood within the bladder.

Using a laparoscopic approach, the surgeons were able to accurately access the injured area, repair the bladder rupture, and restore the integrity of the bladder wall, while minimizing surgical invasiveness compared with open surgery in appropriately selected cases.

✅ Following surgery, the patient recovered well and was discharged after seven days of postoperative treatment.

This case once again demonstrates that, in trauma emergencies, potentially serious internal injuries are not always evident from external signs. A systematic clinical assessment, appropriate selection of diagnostic imaging modalities, prompt multidisciplinary consultation, and the ability to perform emergency laparoscopic surgery can play a crucial role in achieving favorable treatment outcomes.

💙 Phan Chau Trinh Hospital Medical University continues to strengthen its capabilities in emergency medicine, diagnostic imaging, surgery, and minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures, supported by multidisciplinary coordination to ensure timely management of traumatic injuries ranging from simple to complex.

Following an accident, particularly when symptoms such as abdominal pain, lower abdominal pain, abdominal distension, difficulty urinating, hematuria, or other unusual signs occur, patients should not underestimate their condition and should seek medical evaluation promptly for timely diagnosis and treatment.

✨ HYSTEROSCOPY
One procedure – One more step toward peace of mind

There are subtle abnormalities inside the uterus that may affect menstrual cycles and fertility — yet they are not always easy to detect.

🔎 Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive technique that allows doctors to directly examine the uterine cavity and the openings of both fallopian tubes using a tiny camera attached to the tip of the hysteroscope. With clear, magnified images, hysteroscopy is considered the gold standard for diagnosing and treating conditions of the uterine cavity.

More than simply providing a clearer view, hysteroscopy offers several important benefits:

🎯 Greater diagnostic accuracy – High-resolution images help doctors identify and assess abnormalities, while certain conditions can be treated during the same procedure when indicated.

🌿 Minimally invasive – The procedure is performed through the natural vaginal and cervical passage, without abdominal incisions or visible scars.

✨ Faster recovery – Patients generally experience less discomfort and can return to their normal activities sooner.

📌 When is hysteroscopy recommended?

The timing of hysteroscopy depends on the purpose of the procedure and each patient's individual condition. In many cases, it is performed after menstruation has completely ended, allowing better visualization and assessment of the uterine cavity.

Hysteroscopy may be recommended for abnormal menstrual bleeding, infertility, or suspected conditions such as endometrial polyps, submucosal fibroids, intrauterine adhesions, and other uterine abnormalities.

Sometimes, what matters is not only having the right treatment, but also an accurate diagnosis that brings reassurance and a gentler treatment journey.

🏥 At Phan Chau Trinh Hospital Medical University, modern hysteroscopy equipment and an experienced team of Obstetrics & Gynecology specialists are dedicated to providing accurate diagnosis, appropriate intervention, and gentle, patient-centered care.

27/08/2026

🎯 ENDOSCOPIC REMOVAL OF A LARGE PEDUNCULATED COLON POLYP USING AN ENDOLOOP

“I feel perfectly healthy. I don’t have abdominal pain or any symptoms, so why should I get checked?”

In reality, colorectal polyps and early-stage colorectal cancer may develop silently without noticeable symptoms. Screening can help detect abnormalities at an early stage and allow appropriate management when needed.

🔎 A LARGE PEDUNCULATED COLON POLYP DETECTED DURING SCREENING COLONOSCOPY

Recently, a 58-year-old man underwent screening colonoscopy at Phan Chau Trinh Hospital Medical University, despite having no significant gastrointestinal symptoms.

During the procedure, Dr. Nguyen Duc Quang, MSc, Resident Physician, and the endoscopy team identified a large colon polyp with a long and relatively thick stalk.

For large pedunculated polyps, particularly those with a thick stalk, removal requires careful assessment and appropriate stalk control because the stalk may contain feeding blood vessels, which can increase the risk of bleeding during and after polyp removal.

After carefully evaluating the lesion, the medical team chose to place an Endoloop—a mechanical ligation loop around the polyp stalk—before resection.

🛡️ ENDOLOOP – STALK CONTROL BEFORE POLYP RESECTION
For large pedunculated polyps, controlling the stalk before resection is an important step to help reduce the risk of bleeding.

The Endoloop was placed and tightened around the polyp stalk, creating a mechanical ligature to help control the blood vessels within the stalk before resection.

The polyp was then completely removed endoscopically and sent for histopathological examination.

Pathology confirmed the lesion as a tubulovillous adenoma, providing important information for further assessment and appropriate follow-up planning.

💡 COLONOSCOPY: NOT ONLY FOR DETECTION, BUT ALSO FOR TREATMENT
Today, colonoscopy plays an important role not only in detecting polyps and other colorectal abnormalities, but also, in many cases, in removing lesions during the same procedure.

For appropriately selected polyps, endoscopic removal is a minimally invasive approach that can reduce procedural trauma and facilitate recovery.

❤️ ONE CASE – ONE HEALTH MESSAGE
What is noteworthy about this case is that a large colon polyp was detected in a patient who had no obvious symptoms. This highlights the important role of screening in identifying colorectal lesions that may develop silently.

Some adenomatous polyps are precancerous lesions and may progress to colorectal cancer over time. Early detection, appropriate assessment, and timely management of high-risk lesions can contribute to reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.

🏸 BADMINTON INJURY LEAVES RUSSIAN MAN WITH A COMPLETE ACHILLES TENDON RUPTURE

The Department of Surgery at Phan Chau Trinh Hospital Medical University recently received R.M., a Russian patient born in 1988, who was admitted following an injury sustained while playing badminton in Vietnam.

While jumping and forcefully pushing off to reach the shuttlecock, the patient suddenly heard a “pop” at the back of his left ankle. He felt as though someone had kicked him hard in the heel, followed by pain, difficulty walking, and an inability to stand on tiptoe.

Clinical examination and MRI confirmed a complete rupture of the left Achilles tendon, and surgery was indicated.

On August 20, 2026, the patient underwent minimally invasive Achilles tendon repair performed by Specialist Level I Dr. Cao Anh Thai and the surgical team from the Department of Surgery.

Through a limited incision, the two ruptured tendon ends were identified, brought back into proper alignment, and securely sutured to restore the tendon’s normal length and continuity.

Compared with a traditional open approach, minimally invasive repair, when appropriately indicated, offers several advantages:
🔹 Smaller incision with less soft-tissue disruption.
🔹 Reduced risk of delayed wound healing and wound-related complications.
🔹 Less scarring at the back of the ankle.
🔹 Facilitates earlier, controlled mobilization and rehabilitation.

After surgery, the ankle was immobilized in a position that protects the tendon repair. The patient will gradually progress with weight-bearing and rehabilitation exercises according to each stage of recovery under medical supervision.

⚠️ The Achilles tendon is the largest and strongest tendon in the human body, connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. It plays an essential role in walking, running, jumping, and accelerating.

Achilles tendon injuries commonly occur when the foot is bearing weight while the calf muscles contract suddenly and forcefully, particularly during sports such as badminton, football, tennis, and basketball. Typical signs of an Achilles tendon rupture include:
* Hearing a “pop” at the back of the ankle.
* Feeling as though someone has kicked the heel.
* Pain and swelling at the back of the ankle.
* Difficulty walking and reduced push-off strength.
* Inability to stand on tiptoe on the affected side.

📌 When these symptoms occur, the person should stop physical activity immediately and seek prompt evaluation at an orthopedic trauma facility. Attempting to continue walking or playing sports may cause the ruptured tendon ends to retract, increase the gap between them, and make treatment more difficult.

Early diagnosis, appropriate treatment selection, and the use of a suitable surgical technique can help restore tendon integrity, reduce the risk of complications, and provide a solid foundation for a safe return to physical activity.

💙 The Department of Surgery at Phan Chau Trinh Hospital Medical University is always ready to support patients throughout their journey to restore mobility and safely and effectively return to their daily activities and normal life.
