Phung Village is entering its golden rice season. From around mid-September, the terraces start turning yellow, but not all at once—expect a mix of green and gold.

Some road sections into the village are currently under repair. Low-clearance and 2WD cars are best avoided; 4WD vehicles or motorbikes are more suitable. For the wider Hoang Su Phi route, a motorbike with a local rider is the most flexible option.

“No time for a separate multi-day trip to Hoang Su Phi? Xa Phin gives you another way to see Ha Giang’s rice terraces.

After finishing the Ha Giang tour that suits you, return to Ha Giang City and add Pai’s 1D Tay Con Linh Village Tour. The day brings together terraced fields, moss-covered houses, a mountain waterfall, Dao village life and old Shan Tuyet tea trees.

Rice in Xa Phin usually ripens later than in many other areas, often around early October. The terraces are already beautiful in September, while the exact colour and harvest timing can vary by field and weather.

September is when Ha Giang begins to feel like autumn: more sunny periods, cooler air and gradually drier days, especially later in the month. It can be an excellent time for motorbike travel, hiking, kayaking and waterfall stops—but early-September rain and local road conditions still need to be checked.

Choose Hoang Su Phi – Xin Man for golden rice; the Classic Ha Giang Tour for a first visit; or an In-depth / Classic & Nature route if you want more outdoor activities.

Pack sunscreen, moisturiser, a light jacket, a compact rain layer and shoes with good grip. Pai checks the exact route close to departure and adjusts when conditions are unsuitable.

Our 2 September National Day tours are underway, so here is an honest update from the road today.

The weather has been kind to our groups, with beautiful sunshine along the journey. There are more visitors than usual, but Pai’s groups have not encountered traffic jams on the routes we are travelling so far.

Buckwheat flowers are already in bloom. In Hoang Su Phi, the rice terraces are still mostly fresh green, while a few places—including Ban Phung—are beginning to show their first hints of gold.

One detail to know: the Nho Que River has not yet returned to its familiar green. The landscape is still beautiful, and we are sharing the conditions as they are so travellers know what to expect.
