Falling is a big fear of older adults, but it doesn’t have to be.

Getting comfortable on the floor is the first step to being prepared for falls.

If you were to fall:
Mobility exercises can help get you in a better position
Weight shifting exercises can help you get to a nearby object to get up.
Strength and power can help you push off the ground.

When is the last time you got on/off the floor?

Remember- your body is strong, resilient and you can take control of your health at any age. đŸ’ȘđŸŒ

How do you get off the ground without furniture?

Here are two safe and effective options I teach every day — especially for older adults who want to feel strong and confident again on the floor.

Option 1 (Preferred, more challenging):
Start seated, roll onto hands and knees, step one foot forward into a deep lunge, then press up through your legs to stand.
This builds strength, coordination, and floor confidence
but it does take some practice.

Option 2 (Easier starting point):
Start seated, roll onto hands and knees, drive one foot forward slightly, then the other. Walk your hands back toward your legs like a ladder until you’re upright.
Wider base, better balance
 great for beginners.

💡 Haven’t been on the ground in a while? Make sure someone’s nearby when trying this for the first time.

And if this is something you or your parent wants to get better at

That’s exactly why I built HomeStrong — a strength program designed to help older adults get off the floor, regain control, and stay independent.

This story isn’t meant to make fun of anyone living with dementia. If anything, it’s meant to shed light on how real and unpredictable these situations can be for caregivers, staff, therapists, and families every single day. Sometimes you have to navigate difficult moments with patience, empathy
and occasionally laugh at the chaos afterward. Dementia is heartbreaking, confusing, and very real, and today was definitely one for the books.

Sitting in a chair and squeezing a ball between your legs is NOT going to improve function. Boom. I said it.

Exercise programming for the older adult should look and feel like the activity they are having difficulty with. Keep it simple. Anything else leads to inferior results, frustration and low motivation.

Feeling unsteady? Try these three simple exercises at the kitchen sink to build better balance and control:

1ïžâƒŁ Reach Downs – A bodyweight deadlift to build posterior chain strength and hip control. Move slowly and avoid hitting your head on the counter in front of you.

2ïžâƒŁ Single Leg Balance – Face sideways to the sink and gently rest your hip against the counter for support. Avoid using your hands. Balance starts in the core and hips, not your grip.

3ïžâƒŁ Side Kicks – From the same position, swing your opposite leg out to the side and back without putting it down between reps. This challenges dynamic balance and hip strength.

These aren’t just “senior exercises” — they’re smart training tools to help you feel more stable and confident during everyday movement.

đŸŽ„ At the end, I’d love to hear from you. What are your favorite balance exercises? Comment below.

This is the reason I love what I do!

I keep my patients MOTIVATED and they keep me even more MOTIVATED!

Finding motivation can be extremely hard for someone initially who struggles even to get out of bed but with the right help, attitude and support
anything is possible đŸ’Ș

This is why balance feels impossible with neuropathy.

Peripheral neuropathy doesn’t just affect sensation.
It changes how the entire foot contributes to balance.

When the toes stiffen, curl, or lose contact with the ground, the forefoot stops helping. Balance becomes heel-dominant, which is why walking feels unstable, backward steps feel scary, and many people begin relying on walkers for safety.

You’ll notice some of these clips are barefoot.
That’s intentional and educational.

Foot protection is always important, especially outdoors. But when retraining the foot, working barefoot in a controlled setting can help improve awareness, mobility, and connection between the foot and the nervous system.

The goal isn’t to take support away too soon.
The goal is to retrain forward weight distribution, improve forefoot and toe engagement, and teach the body how to use the entire foot again.

At the end of this video, you’ll see a glimpse of a few exercises I commonly use to help with this.

If you have neuropathy, or you’re caring for someone who does, there are ways to work on balance beyond just accepting decline.
