The 3pm crash is not a character flaw, we’re all aware of that. It’s a metabolic event that our ADHD brains can’t buffer.
Every productivity and hustle account will tell you to push through the afternoon slump. Drink water. Take a walk. None of that addresses what’s actually happening.
By mid-afternoon, cortisol is on its natural decline. If your blood sugar has been spiking and crashing all day - more likely if you skipped breakfast or relied on fast carbs - you’re now running a prefrontal cortex on fumes. For ADHD brains, that’s a double hit: executive function is already compromised by dopamine deficiency, and willpower is a finite cognitive resource that depletes faster when the underlying fuel supply is unstable.
Research in Neuropsychology Review links blood glucose variability to impaired self-regulation, particularly in individuals with executive function deficits.
Discipline is not the fix. What is: protein at breakfast, stable blood sugar through the day, and eating before the crash - not after.
Save this for the next time you want to blame yourself for losing it at 3pm.
