As a wellness practitioner that supports people who have experienced pregnancy loss, I am relieved to see that this Bill is finally getting closer to being enacted in Ireland.

Fundamentals of the Bill:

🔵Compassionate leave for those undergoing fertility treatment
🔵Compassionate leave and for those who have experienced a pregnancy loss up to 23 weeks in a pregnancy
🔵Issuing of pregnancy loss certificates
All of these are are fundamental steps to assist the healing and recovery after a pregnancy loss.

Feeling significant gratitude towards all the Pregnancy Loss charities and volunteers including The Miscarriage Association of Ireland, individuals and public representatives that have contributed to this legislation since 2021.

We warmly welcome the proposal of the Pregnancy Loss (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2025 — a very positive step toward recognising the grief and silence surrounding pregnancy loss.

This proposed legislation aims to offer paid leave to those who experience loss, protection from workplace discrimination, and the option to formally acknowledge that loss.

We look forward to working with Senator Nicole Ryan to support the progression of this important bill — so future families don’t have to suffer in silence or return to work too soon.

This proposal is just the beginning. Let’s break the silence together.
Pictured here are our Secretary, Roisin and Chairperson Jennifer, who recently met with Senator Ryan in Leinster House to discuss the bill.

Pregnancy loss is usually very unexpected, often at a time whereby expectant parents are due to share or have shared a pregnancy announcement.
Here's my recent article on how grounding exercises can allow bereaved expectant parents to be aware of their immediate needs at a time of what can feel like insurmountable overwhelm

Mindfulness teacher Emma Walker shares three beneficial grounding exercises she recommends to aid in the healing process following pregnancy loss.

'Breathing in I calm the body'
'Breathing out I smile'
When we are out walking or at rest and not feeling stressed+ we can practice using the breath to calm the body.
When we bring attention to what's going on in the body we can respond to it's needs quicker.
Adopting this habit of breath supporting the body increases our capacity to care for ourselves in times of overwhelm/stress+

Noticing and lingering in Joy is very achievable once we remember to do it. Regularly experiencing joy contributes to resilience and promotes positive wellbeing
Here's some suggestions:

🔵Bringing mindfulness to your walking outdoors - Look up and look around, listen for birdsong
🔵Listening to music that brings liveliness to your mood
🔵Actively giving time to doing a task that brings you joy
🔵Use every day occurrences such as brushing your teeth or turning on a laptop as cues to think of something you are grateful for.
🔵Set yourself up for joy - spending little moments outdoors especially on work days spend time in company of those who make you smile people or pets
🔵Praise yourself like you would a friend when you notice you are lingering in Joy. It helps instill linger in Joy as a habit.

Becoming overwhelmed by negative chatter, news, and doom scrolling (transient feeling felt when scrolling through negative articles and a sharp dip in mood is felt) can be a regular occurrence for many.
Here's some tips to reduce saturation by news:
🔵Put limitations on your news intake 10 - 15 minutes
🔵Choose your news source by selecting a particular website/social media account to use
🔵Unfollow accounts that appear to cause sharp mood changes (anxious/low mood)
🔵Turn off or mute notifications on your smartphone
🔵Avoid scrolling an hour before sleep. (Ideally no use of any electronic device an hour before sleep) But if you do, actively choose what you are going to watch/listen to or scroll. Choose uplifting content.
A mind at ease allows a body to enter sleep more easily.
