Through interactive, accredited continuing education (CE) workshops, we help nurses recover from burnout, compassion fatigue, and moral injury—restoring their voice, their self-care, and their sense of meaning in the work.

In August we shared a number: replacing one staff nurse costs a hospital roughly $61,000.

This month we’ve been talking about forgiveness and moral injury, and it changes how that number reads.

Many nurses who leave aren’t leaving the work. They’re leaving the weight: the shift they still replay, the care they knew a patient needed and couldn’t give, the losses nobody stopped to name. When a unit never makes room to set that down, it comes out sideways, as numbness, cynicism, or the quiet decision to leave the bedside. Then the hospital pays to start over.

Making room doesn’t cost $61,000. A protected debrief after a hard death. A pause to name a loss before moving on. A leader who says out loud that what happened was not the nurse’s failure. None of that is a perk. It’s how a unit keeps the people it already has.

Our latest blog post, “The Weight We Carry,” looks at what making room for moral injury can look like on a real unit: https://www.codeyou.info/post/moral-injury-in-nursing

Two days until we gather at Mercy Center in Auburn.

On Saturday, nurses from around the region will step away from the floor for a full day of rest: From Exhausted to Enlivened. Quiet grounds, a good meal, time to reflect, and a room full of people who understand what this year has asked of you.

To everyone coming: there’s nothing to prepare. Come as you are, and bring whatever you’ve been carrying. You can set it down for a day.

Still thinking about joining us? The retreat runs Saturday, Oct 24, 9 AM to 4 PM. $150 covers the program, lunch, workshop materials, and 3 CE contact hours, with a $75 non-refundable deposit to hold your spot. Register through Mercy Center: https://www.mercycenter.org/all-events/the-transforming-power-of-rest

We’re grateful to Mercy Center for hosting us, and to Susan Cosio, Phyllis Morton, and Tamara Ramirez for leading the day.

All month we’ve been sitting with what’s ours to carry and what was never ours. A lot of it rides home with us after a shift.

So before you pull out of the parking lot, try shifting gears:

P: Park. Engine off. Hands resting on the wheel. Feel the seat holding you.
R: Reverse. Look back at today, just for a moment. Name one thing that went right, even something small. Then name one thing you’re leaving here. If it’s yours, it will still be there tomorrow.
N: Neutral. Take three slow breaths, a little longer out than in. Nothing to fix, nothing to solve.
D: Drive. Start the car. Let the drive be just the drive.

Taking the bus or walking home? Run through it at the stop or at your front door.

This one is for the parked car, not the road. Once you’re moving, your attention belongs there.

What’s one thing you’ll leave in the parking lot tonight? Tell us in the comments if you’d like. 🤍

What a week in San Antonio! 🌿

We're home with full hearts and wanted to share a few of the moments that filled them:

💛 Our Fall Retreats — Nurses and healthcare professionals stepped away from the pace of their work to rest, reflect, and reconnect with why they chose this calling. Thank you to everyone who came and gave yourselves permission to be cared for.

🎓 A CODE YOU first! — We are so proud to celebrate Iselda, the very first graduate of the CODE YOU Leadership Internship. Watching you grow, lead, and pour into other nurses has been one of the great joys of this work. Congratulations, Iselda — you are the heart of what we hope to multiply!

🩺 Medical and dental students at UT Health San Antonio through — Spending time with the next generation of healthcare professionals gave us so much hope. Your questions, your honesty, and your heart for patients inspired us.

👂 Methodist Healthcare Ministries Fall Forum — What an honor it was to be in the room with the people of . Their community nurses show up every day for neighbors and families across South Texas, meeting people right where they are with skill, compassion, and faith. It is beautiful, life-giving work, and we were deeply humbled to stand alongside them. We presented on active listening and how the verbatim tool can transform communication in healthcare, and watching participants write and share their own verbatims reminded us that real listening changes everything. Thank you, MHM, for having us and for all you do for your community.

Thank you, San Antonio, for welcoming us so warmly. This is the work of resuscitating and strengthening the heart and soul of nursing — and of everyone who cares for others.

And we're not slowing down! Next week we're in Northern California, and we can't wait to see what this next chapter holds. Stay tuned! 🌲

Did you know your employer might double your gift to CODE YOU? 💛

CODE YOU is now on Benevity, YourCause and Bright Funds, the workplace giving platforms many companies and health systems use. If your employer offers giving or volunteer matching:

Log in to your company's giving portal
Search "CODE YOU" (EIN 93-4049024)
Give, request a match, or log your volunteer hours

Not sure if your workplace matches? Ask HR, or drop your employer in the comments and we'll help you check.

Prefer to give directly? https://givebutter.com/codeyou

Every matched gift helps us keep resuscitating and strengthening the heart and soul of nursing.

This month we've been sitting with forgiveness: what was yours to carry, and what was never yours. Today, a way to practice setting some of it down.

Trees don't hold on to every leaf to prove they're strong. Letting go is how they make it through winter.

Step outside, or find a window. Pick one leaf, or picture one.
Name one thing from this year you're ready to set down — a shift, a "should," an expectation you were never meant to meet.
Say it once, quietly or on paper.
Let the leaf go, or set the paper down.
Take three slow exhales, a little longer out than in.

You don't have to set down everything. One leaf is enough. If you'd like, tell us in the comments what you let go of. 🤍

This practice went out in today's CODE YOU newsletter. Want the next one in your inbox? Subscribe on our website: https://www.codeyou.info

Moral injury happens to people whose conscience works. It is evidence of your values, not their absence.

That line is from Part 4 of our Foundations of Wholistic Nurse Well-Being series, "The Weight We Carry: Making Room for Moral Injury at Work," on the blog today.

It opens on a night from Tamara's years as an after-hours hospice nurse, and then asks a harder question: what happens to the weight when the only instruction is to keep moving? After a hard death, the room gets turned over and the bed gets filled. No one means it as cruelty. But over time nurses learn that grief is something to handle on the drive home, and weight with nowhere to go comes out sideways.

The post also looks at what it takes for an organization to make room for that weight, so no one has to carry it alone.

Tomorrow, October 10, is World Mental Health Day. This year's theme is "Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change."

For nurses, being heard often starts with other nurses. The shift that went wrong, the patient you still think about, the grief you never had time for: these are easier to hold when someone who has stood where you stand says, "Me too."

That isn't just a feeling. A 2022 review of peer support among healthcare workers found that peers help colleagues understand their emotions and normalize what they've lived through, and many of the programs studied reported real benefit for the staff involved.

Tomorrow in San Antonio, a room full of nurses will spend the day doing exactly that: food, art, yoga, reflection, and time with people who understand. To everyone joining us, we can't wait to see you.

For leaders: peer support doesn't need a retreat to begin. A few protected minutes where nurses can talk honestly with each other is a start.

If you're struggling, you don't have to carry it alone. In the US, you can call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

On Monday we talked about reflection as a clinical skill: noticing what happened and what you'll carry forward. Today, the other half. A hard shift doesn't only live in your memory. It lives in your shoulders, your jaw, your breath.

Somatic practice simply means paying attention through the body. Here's a two-minute version you can do in a break room, a parked car, or your kitchen:

Feet flat on the floor. Notice where they meet the ground.
One hand on your chest, one on your belly. Just notice your breath, without changing it yet.
Let the exhale run a little longer than the inhale, three times.
Shake out your hands, then roll your shoulders slowly, forward and back.
Pause. Notice what feels different, even a little.

Nothing has to be fixed, and nothing has to be felt a certain way. Noticing is the practice.

This Saturday in San Antonio, Tamara Ramirez leads a longer version of this practice at our Fall Retreat. If you're joining us, this is a small preview. If not, it's yours to keep.

Last week we talked about moral injury: the weight of being kept from giving the care you knew a patient needed. This week, a skill that helps nurses start to process it.

Reflection usually gets filed under self-care, something you do with a notebook if there's time left over. Most shifts don't leave any, so it gets skipped.

But reflection is closer to assessment than to journaling. You already do it all shift: you notice, compare, decide what it means, and adjust the plan. Reflection is that same skill turned toward your own practice, done on purpose instead of at 2 a.m.

The difference is where it lands.
Rumination loops. It replays the hard moment and ends on "I should have."
Reflection lands. It asks what happened, what you knew at the time, and what you'll carry into the next shift.

A small way to practice this week: pick one moment from your last shift. Describe it the way you'd chart it, facts only, no verdict. Then name one thing you did well in it.

For leaders: when reflection only happens on a nurse's own time, it often turns into rumination instead. A few protected minutes in the shift can change that.

Well-being is built, not summoned. 🤍
