Mozzarella, parmesan, cheddar, feta, cottage cheese, paneer…
Which cheese is actually healthy — and can you eat it every day?
Let me say this clearly: cheese is not junk food. It's a concentrated dairy food — concentrated in protein, calcium, fat and sodium.
So the real issue isn't cheese. It's portion, frequency and type.
A quick guide:
🧀 Mozzarella — mild, melts beautifully, one of the lighter cheeses
🧀 Cottage cheese & ricotta — protein-friendly and filling
🧀 Paneer — high protein, but calorie dense
🧀 Parmesan & feta — salty and strong, so a little goes a long way
🧀 Swiss — naturally lower in lactose, good for sensitive digestion
🧀 Cheddar — richer, so keep portions smaller
🧀 American slices & cream cheese — occasional, not everyday
Grocery tip: buy block cheese and shred it at home. Pre-shredded often has anti-caking agents, and slices are usually more processed.
One serving is about 1 ounce (28 g) — 1 slice, 2 tablespoons grated, or 2 small cubes. Most of us eat 3–4 servings without realizing it.
My SonaWell cheese rule:
✔ Choose real cheese over processed cheese
✔ Prefer mozzarella, cottage cheese, ricotta and paneer in moderation
✔ Use parmesan and feta as flavor boosters
✔ Don't make cheese your main protein every day
✔ Portion is everything
Cheese is not the villain. Overuse is.
