Learn about the treatment of adult patients with Cervicogenic or Tension-Type Headaches

A brand-new module on eacacademy.com is based on a fascinating article by Trager et al and is titled ‘Chiropractic Management of Adults with Cervicogenic (CGH) or Tension-Type Headaches (TTH): Development of a Clinical Practice Guideline‘.

Cervicogenic headache (CGH) and tension-type headache (TTH) are common conditions frequently encountered in chiropractic practice. This clinical practice guideline provides evidence-based recommendations for the nonpharmacological management of these headaches in adults. It covers key aspects of care including history taking, identification of red, orange, and yellow flags, diagnostic criteria, physical examination, and appropriate use of imaging.

The guideline also outlines treatment strategies such as spinal manipulative therapy (SMT), multimodal care, therapeutic exercise, and patient education.

Emphasis is placed on patient-centred care, clinical decision-making, and appropriate referral to improve outcomes such as pain, frequency, disability, and quality of life.

This module aims to help you:
• Recognize key diagnostic features and clinical criteria for cervicogenic and tension-type headaches.
• Improve clinical decision-making using evidence-based nonpharmacological treatment strategies.
• Understand the role of multimodal care, including spinal manipulation, exercise, and patient education.
• Identify when imaging, referral, or co-management is appropriate in headache patients.

What an incredible few days we have had together at ECU2026 in Zurich 🇨🇭

As Secretary General of ECU, I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped make these days so special.

A very special thank you to our partner ChiroSuisse for a fantastic collaboration and for delivering such an amazing Convention. You have done an incredible job.

Thank you to all speakers, panel participants, researchers, exhibitors, sponsors, leaders, stakeholders, and everyone who contributed with knowledge, ideas, discussions, and inspiration throughout the week.

And most of all — thank you to all of you who chose to come and be with us.

What makes events like this special is not only the science and the programme. It is the people. The conversations in between sessions, the friendships, the familiar faces, the new connections, and the feeling of being together again as one large chiropractic family.

Zurich has given us fantastic days and many great memories.

I wish everyone a safe journey home and I already look forward to meeting you all again.

Thank you everyone ❤️

Another excellent and inspiring day at ECU2026 in Zurich 🇨🇭

Today’s programme brought together leading international researchers, clinicians, and educators to explore some of the most important developments currently shaping modern musculoskeletal healthcare.

The plenary sessions covered:
• new evidence supporting the evolving role of chiropractors within healthcare systems
• pain science and placebo analgesia
• the therapeutic importance of clinician–patient interaction
• contextual and biopsychosocial approaches to care
• and cutting-edge neuroimaging research examining the therapeutic alliance between patients and clinicians.

The afternoon symposiums and parallel sessions will offer a wide range of clinically relevant topics including shoulder treatment, radiology, laser therapy, proprioception and rehabilitation approaches, personalised bioregulatory medicine, and presentation of the latest research abstracts.

One of the strongest themes throughout the day was the growing shift toward more integrated, patient-centred, movement-based, and evidence-informed approaches to musculoskeletal care.

A sincere thank you to all speakers, presenters, moderators, organisers, sponsors, exhibitors, and participants contributing to such a strong scientific and professional programme throughout ECU2026.

We now look forward to tonight’s Swiss Night — bringing colleagues and friends together for a fantastic evening of dinner, conversations, networking, and social interaction

A fantastic and highly inspiring start to ECU2026 today in Zurich with the opening keynote from Professor Jan Hartvigsen, Full Professor and Head of Research at the Center for Muscle and Joint Health, University of Southern Denmark, and Senior Researcher at the Chiropractic Knowledge Hub.

In his keynote presentation, “Good Reason for Optimism: New Evidence is Making Chiropractors More Relevant Than Ever Before,” Professor Hartvigsen highlighted important developments in musculoskeletal research, healthcare policy, rehabilitation, and future healthcare delivery.

One of the key takeaways from the presentation was the growing shift within modern healthcare away from purely pharmacological pain management approaches and toward more active, biopsychosocial, multimodal, and patient-centred care models.

The increasing focus on:
• movement and exercise
• rehabilitation
• patient education
• self-management
• conservative care pathways
• and long-term function and quality of life

reflects many of the approaches chiropractors are increasingly integrating into modern clinical practice across Europe.

The keynote also strongly reinforced the scale of the musculoskeletal health challenge facing ageing societies and modern healthcare systems — and why musculoskeletal health is becoming an increasingly important public health priority internationally.

Thank you to Professor Hartvigsen for an outstanding opening keynote and an important contribution to ECU2026.

A very engaging and important Political Forum took place today at ECU2026 in Zurich, focusing on the integration of chiropractic within national health systems across Europe.

The discussion brought together perspectives from healthcare policy, research, rehabilitation, public health, politics, and professional leadership to explore how healthcare systems can continue evolving to meet the growing burden of musculoskeletal disorders facing modern societies.

A sincere thank you to Sonja Kahlmeier for moderating such an excellent discussion and creating a genuinely thoughtful and constructive forum for exchange.

Thank you also to all fellow panel participants for their valuable contributions:
• Michael Stucki from ZHAW Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften for presenting important data relating to the societal and economic burden of musculoskeletal disorders and the growing need for conservative first-line care options.
• Pierre Côté for highlighting important perspectives around evidence, advocacy, healthcare integration, and the future role of musculoskeletal education within healthcare systems.
• Shirin Kiani from WHO Regional Office for Europe for sharing important WHO perspectives relating to rehabilitation, ageing populations, and future healthcare system challenges across Europe.
• Bettina Balmer for contributing important political perspectives regarding healthcare integration, political decision-making, and current developments within Switzerland.

Several important themes emerged during the debate, including:
• the growing need for strong conservative musculoskeletal care capacity
• rehabilitation and ageing populations
• interprofessional collaboration
• patient safety and accountability
• educational quality and professional standards
• and the importance of trust and coherence within modern healthcare systems

I introduced the discussion reflecting on many of the core priorities within the ECU Strategy 2025–2029 and highlighted the importance of continued collaboration across professions, organisations, research environments, and healthcare systems moving forward. These reflections were further discussed by the panel.

Thank you to everyone attending ECU2026 and contributing to these important conversations about the future of musculoskeletal healthcare in Europe.
