It’s long overdue but yesterday the EPA announced plans to finally regulate PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) a class of chemicals sometimes called “forever chemicals” because of their persistence in our bodies and the environment.
☠️☠️☠️ PFAs have been linked to a number of health issues and are notorious for being highly toxic even in very small amounts, and they’ve been making their way into the water supply which is part of what has prompted the EPA to restrict them from being released into the environment.
PFAS are found in everything from food packaging to cleaning products and a few months ago yet another study was released in the journal Environmental Science & Technology that your makeup probably contains some unwanted chemicals too.
In fact, they were found in over 50% of the products they tested. 😬
They’re often added to cosmetics to make your skin feel smoother and make the products last longer. Foundations, lipstick and mascara were the biggest culprits, with products marketed as "long-lasting," or "waterproof" containing the highest amounts.
🧐 Reading labels can sometimes feel like reading a foreign language, and as the study highlighted, many of the products that contained these chemicals didn’t even have them listed on the label!
Fortunately, the smarty pants have done the heavy lifting and created a huge database that allows you to see how your products stack up in terms of toxins.
No need to stress yourself out....As they say the best defense is a good offense so keep your body’s natural detoxification systems working well by eating lot’s of antioxidants and phytonutrients from colorful fruits and veggies, drinking plenty of (purified) water and trying to decrease your exposures when and where you can.
