Soft Earth Forest Therapy Guided forest bathing / forest therapy walks and nature connection experiences in Tiohtia:ke/Montreal.

Forest therapy - also known as forest bathing or Shinrin-Yoku - is an evidence-based practice where individuals connect with forest environments through gentle sensory opening invitations. This practice evolved from the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku (pronounced sheen-deen yoh-koo) - which translates as "forest bathing" - and means taking in, with all of our senses, the forest environment. Fore

st therapy walks are focused on slowing down, staying present to the moment, prioritizing embodiment and sensory experience over intellectual experience, orienting to sensorial pleasures, and allowing curiosity and soft fascination to lead to reflection. Forest therapy lies at the intersection of science, medicine, philosophy, ecopsychology, and indigenous ways of relating to the natural world (more on that below), and is firmly rooted in what we know to be intrinsically true within us - of our place and belonging within the web of life. As the forest heals us, we come to develop a deep bond and connection with the forest, and from that love and care, we are more likely to be a caretaker of it and of the natural world. After all, as Jacques Cousteau so famously stated, “people protect what they love”. In an accelerating, chaotic, and ever-changing world, this grounding and life-affirming work is deeply needed, especially in urban contexts, where the rift between humans and the more-than-human world can be acutely felt.

All emotions are inextricably interconnected. Wonder and grief, awe and sadness.
I've been grateful for this poem over the years for encapsulating it all so beautifully.

I hope this message finds you well as ease ever deeper into fall. Lengthening nights, slowing down, returning to practices of warmth and comfort — fall feels good, doesn’t it?

Yesterday I guided a forest bathing walk at the .mtl . I had the privilege of beginning the walk before opening hours, just as the sun was filtering through the leaves (komorebi, in Japanese), illuminating spiderwebs, fox dens, restless migratory birds, and the changing leaves.

It was a dream of mine to guide a forest bathing walk there, and I feel very grateful to for having guided four walks there to date.

Hot tip: If you live in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal, you can enter the outdoor parts of the gardens for free with the Accès Montréal card.

𖤓 summer greetings + forest bathing at the botanical gardens -

I am beginning my master’s program in Environmental Education and Communication on Monday, and could not be more excited (and nervous)! Because of this, my guiding practice is slowing down this summer.

I was interviewed several months ago — along with a few other incredible individuals — for Concordia University Magazine about the benefits and importance of connecting to nature.

The health benefits of spending time in nature are well-documented: Exposure to nature positively affects our mental health, cognitive functioning and even our immune systems.

The burgeoning of life, return of migrant birds (and their urgent songs), soft and fragrant air, magic hour sunsets… if this isn’t enlivening, I don’t know what is.
