Wealden Sailability

Wealden Sailability Wealden Sailability, formed in July 2008, is based at Chipstead Sailing Club. In June 2011 the name was changed as a result of moving to Chipstead Sailing Club.

Run entirely by volunteers, we welcome everyone no matter what their disability, Our philosophy is to encourage our sailors so they may aim towards achieving personal goals. Wealden Sailability was formed in July 2008 and until June 2011 operated at Bough Beech Reservoir under the name of Bough Beech Sailability. We are a registered charity and member of the RYA Sailability scheme. The charity is

organised and run entirely by volunteers and we welcome everyone no matter what their disability. Our philosophy is to encourage our sailors to develop their sailing skills so that they may aim towards achieving personal goals, which may be simply to enjoy the freedom of being on the water, or to progress to taking full control and sailing solo, or even to learning to race.

Afternoon all
Well, we’ve had a couple of real good training days both on our sailing boats as well as power craft. It’s surprising how out of tune one gets after a the long break since September when we were forced to close for the lock down so the practice has been really useful.

We plan to be on song for our first sessions with guests, probably mid May. By then all the boats will have been repaired and new sails added in some cases - they look fantastic when all out on the water together.

We have almost 30 people coming tomorrow (27th April) which will give some time to practice Covid safe sailing so we are ready, confident and above all, competent to look after our valued clients - and volunteers of course!

Take a look at the Chipstead Sailing Club website www.chipsteadsc.org.uk and note that they have planned their annual open day for 3rd May. You will probably have to book in advance so do check first in case the spaces are all gone.

Chipstead are generous hosts to Wealden Sailability and we always like to support them in what ever ways we can. We shall have a few of our volunteers on hand to help out, including me so, I hope to see some of you then.

Hello everybody
Thank goodness Covid is nearly gone away and most us are protected with our vaccinations. Wealden Sailability will be up and running again soon. Lots of volunteers are preparing to finish off the interrupted work from last autumn of boat mending, cleaning and prepping for this new season. Why not watch the web site www.WealdenSailability.org to see the latest news about the start of the season. If you want to join our bank of volunteers send me a message and I’ll keep you posted. The same goes for those of you that would like to come and sail with us, we are looking forward to having you all back with us.

Oh how we are being spoiled by the weather Gods...another race day with near perfect conditions. Horizon to horizon sunshine and 7 to 10 knots of cool wind veering and backing between WNW and WSW. The Session manager, Steve, was delighted to welcome a large turnout of volunteers to his briefing at 0930 outside the clubhouse. Below us, nodding on the water as they were buffeted by the wind, were eight 303, 5 Liberty, a sole 2.3, two Martins, a Venture and two Stratos ready for....well, who knows. [ 465 more words ]

What a day was had by all who ventured down to join the 25 or so volunteers of Wealden Sailability at Chipstead. A nearly completely blue sky and 10 to 14 knots of westerly wind - veering and backing between SW and NW. Most of the WS Racers arrived early and had plenty of time to test the wind around the course of the Windward Mark A, followed by a broad reach to Mark B and then a downwind run to Mark D and a short reach to Mark J, before tacking and beginning the tough beat back up the lake to pass through the Start/Finish Gate and sail onward to Mark A. The hottest day of the year! That is how July 25 was being advertised and the WS Trustees heeded the warning and decided to curtail the day's sailing to just the morning session. Nevertheless, a dozen WS Racers came down to the lake in the expectation that they might be able to improve their final ranking in this the final race of the Spring Series. [ 537 more words ]

It was great to see so many of you keen WS Racers arrive at the lake this week. And it was a special pleasure to welcome into the race for the first time, Nicola Buss who has previously sailed in a catamaran on Bewl Water as a member of Mariners of Bewl (AKA One of the MOB! Ed.). To her credit Nicola agreed to take the helm of our newest Liberty dinghies despite telling me that she had always disliked the idea of sailing anything that heeled quite as much as a Liberty does.
