My favorite. Oh, and in the South of France, it is also used on windows to avoid having scorpions or flies come into the house!
I decided to do some herb/oil of the day posts and wanted to jump in with lavender because its familiar to most people, and well...amazing!
Most people instantly think of stress-relief when they hear the word lavender, and that's definitely a benefit, but it's far from the only one.
Lavender is antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, calmative, cytophylactic (excellent at soothing and smoothing wounds, scars etc). It has been used to aid in the support of things like bee stings, bug bites, dandruff, skin irritation, mental health and mood balance, anxiety, insomnia, depression, headaches, hair loss, nausea, acne, toothaches, skin irritation, and many more.
Some of why lavender is a good support for these things is due to its chemical make up. In terms of herbalism, lavender has many classifications and varieties like lavender angustafolia (english lavender) and lavendula. Each carries similar properties, and each varies a bit. For instance, many forms of lavender can help to calm seizures, while spike lavender can trigger them.
Some of the compounds found in lavender are: Linalool, which aids in the body's restorative functions. B-Caryophyllene, know for being anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and analgesic. Coumarin, used in supporting skin health and calming dermatisis. Linalyl Acetate, good for supporting digestive function, cardiovascular function, and its also antispasmodic. Another interesting fact is that certain herbs/plants, including lavender, are being shown to act on the same receptors as CBD. When taken with CBD, they can help to create a synergistic, entourage effect.
Its easy to see why lavender is a wonderful, beneficial addition to your health and wellness journey. It's a great helper in creating a low-tox, holistic lifestyle. I encourage everyone to research DEEPLY, and learn about each plants make up, its benefits. Learning about herbs and oils, possible allergies, different applications, and the many ways you can support your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health will help you to craft an effective toolbox for wellness that is paired with knowledge and safety. I'd love to hear how you are experimenting with ways to add lavender into your routine!
