Recommended Eye Exam Frequency Guidelines
Children (0-18 years)
• Regular eye exams ensures a child’s visual development is on track.
• Identifies issues like amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (eye
misalignment) and refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness)
• Comprehensive exams can catch underlying, rare eye diseases like
childhood glaucoma or cataracts early
• Detect eye-muscle coordination issues
• Approximately 80% of learning is visual
• Undiagnosed vision problems in children can lead to poor academic
performance often mistaken for learning disabilities
• First exam at 6 months, then at age 3 and 5 (before starting school)
• Followed by annual or biennial check-ups
