Introducing our new Biokineticist Holly to our thriving practice!

From a young age Holly had a passion for sports. If you name it, she's probably played it. It wasn't until 2013 when she was dancing and representing SA in Denmark, that she realised the need for Biokineticists who help in sports rehabilitation.

"I competed in all of my sports throughout my school career and through into university where I found my love for the gym and bodybuilding as well as action netball. When I'm not working you'll probably find me in the gym."

Graduating from Marist Brothers Linmeyer in 2017, she knew her path was leading her gelling people, and what better way to do so while combining her passion for sports as well as guiding people through their injury rehabilitation. While she was studying she became certified in sports massage, cupping, sports strapping, as well as IASTM blading and opened up her sports massage business where she treated many different people from the general public to professional athletes in soccer, swimming, bodybuilding and strongman, just to name a few.

She graduated in 2022 with a Bachelor of Biokinetics, achieving Ujenius honours awards throughout her studies.

"While I love helping all populations with all conditions from general wellness to chronic, I have a special interest in orthopaedic conditions with specific focus on knees, ankles and shoulders. I love working with all people no matter what the condition and I aim to give the best possible outcome to each one of my patients."

๐Ÿ‘‰ Many people donโ€™t realize that many (66.66%) disc herniations reabsorb with time and conservative care.

๐Ÿงฌ The images in this post are from a case report from the New England Journal of Medicine (see reference) that documents the spontaneous resorption of a disc herniation without surgery.

๐Ÿ”Ž Case Study: A 29-year-old woman presented to the spine clinic with new-onset pain in her right leg, accompanied by paresthesia. MRI of the lumbar spine revealed a lumbar disc herniation resulting in substantial spinal stenosis and nerve-root compression (first image).

๐Ÿ“— She elected conservative treatment with physical therapy and an epidural injection of glucocorticoids. A second MRI obtained at follow-up 5 months after presentation showed resolution of the herniation (second image). Her clinical symptoms resolved, and she was discharged from the clinic.

๐Ÿง  The details of this individualโ€™s rehab were not given in the case study, but it is important to know that relatively simple programs that include movements like walking, general low back mobility drills and low-load resistance training exercises help the majority of people.

TISSUE HEALING

One of the most common issues I encounter when helping people recover from an injury or from surgery is of the healing times of various tissues. Everyone wants to be better now, but this isnโ€™t realistic. Tissue healing takes time. We canโ€™t rush it. And itโ€™s important to understand that tissues heal at different rates depending on their physical makeup and blood supply, among other things. Additional contributing factors, such as diabetes, age, poor nutrition, inadequate rest, etc can further delay the healing process.

This chart shows the average range of healing times for various tissues in the body, including different grades of tissue injury for muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It can serve not only as a guide but also a reminder that we canโ€™t force our bodies to heal faster than physiologically possible. What we can do is optimize the healing process by rehabbing appropriately, eating high quality food, getting adequate rest, and staying patient and positive throughout the journey.
