In a groundbreaking 19-hour operation, surgeons removed a spinal tumor through the eye socket of 19-year-old Karla Flores—marking the first time in medical history that this route has been used for spinal surgery. The tumor was located at the craniocervical junction, the critical area where the brain meets the spinal cord. Traditional surgery would have been too dangerous—so neurosurgeon Dr. Mohamed A. M. Labib pioneered an entirely new path, calling it a "third nostril."
To access the tumor, the surgical team temporarily removed parts of her cheekbone and eye socket, gently repositioned her eyeball, and drilled through her facial bones—reaching the tumor without any external scarring. After successful removal, they rebuilt her face using titanium and bone from her hip. Karla is now cancer-free and recovering well. This surgery isn’t just a milestone—it could change the way deep brain and spine tumors are approached forever.
