ONE OF THE STRONGEST PREDICTORS OF HEALTHY AGEING ISN'T WHAT YOU THINK —

We often think health is just food, exercise, sleep and supplements.

But one of the longest-running studies on adult life — the Harvard Study of Adult Development — found something else: the quality of our close relationships is one of the strongest predictors of both happiness and healthy ageing.

Supportive, emotionally safe relationships can help us feel safer, less isolated and better able to cope with stress. Research suggests positive connection is associated with healthier nervous system responses, while chronic loneliness, conflict and emotional disconnection are associated with more strain on mental and physical health.

This is not a magical cure. Genetics, environment, lifestyle, healthcare and socioeconomic factors all matter enormously.

But having a small number of people with whom we can be honest, feel supported and experience belonging — a kind conversation, a shared meal, feeling truly understood — may be one of the most valuable forms of preventative care.

It's not about having hundreds of connections. Often, a few meaningful ones matter most.

🧠 Most people worry about sugar. They have never heard of the ingredient that spikes blood sugar faster than sugar itself and it is hiding in products labelled as zero sugar.

It is called maltodextrin. And it is one of the most overlooked ingredients in the modern food supply.

What it is:

Maltodextrin is a highly processed starch, typically derived from corn, that is classified as a complex carbohydrate on food labels. That classification is deeply misleading. Despite being technically a starch rather than a sugar, it behaves more aggressively in the body than most sugars do.

The glycemic index problem:

The glycemic index measures how quickly a food raises blood sugar relative to pure glucose. Table sugar sits at around 65. An apple sits at around 36. Maltodextrin's glycemic index sits between 85 and 136 depending on the source and processing method, significantly higher than table sugar and far higher than most people would ever expect from something classified as a complex carbohydrate.

What this means practically is that consuming maltodextrin produces a rapid and significant blood sugar spike, followed by the insulin surge and subsequent crash that drives hunger, fat storage and energy instability. The body responds to it more like a fast sugar than the complex carbohydrate the label implies.

The zero sugar problem:

This is where it becomes genuinely concerning for consumers trying to make informed choices. Because maltodextrin is technically classified as a starch rather than a sugar, manufacturers can use it freely in products labelled as zero sugar, no added sugar or diabetic friendly. The label is technically accurate under current regulations. The metabolic effect is not what the label implies.

Protein powders, meal replacement shakes, low-carb snack bars, sports drinks, sugar-free sauces and dressings, packaged baked goods and diet products commonly contain maltodextrin as a filler, thickener or flavour carrier. It extends shelf life, improves texture and costs very little to produce, which is why it is so widely used.

Why it matters beyond blood sugar:

Chronically elevated blood sugar and insulin drive visceral fat accumulation, insulin resistance, systemic inflammation and accelerated biological aging. These are the downstream consequences of repeated blood sugar spikes and most people consuming products they believe are healthy or sugar-free have no idea they are producing the same metabolic response as eating sugar.

Research has also raised questions about maltodextrin's effect on the gut microbiome, some studies suggesting it may promote the growth of bacterial strains associated with inflammatory bowel conditions and reduce the diversity of beneficial bacteria. This is an area of ongoing research but the signals are worth paying attention to.

What to do:

Read the ingredient label, not just the nutrition panel. Zero sugar on the front of a package tells you nothing about the glycemic impact of what is inside. If maltodextrin appears in the ingredient list, particularly in the first few ingredients, the product is likely producing a blood sugar response inconsistent with what its marketing implies.

Whole foods do not contain maltodextrin. It is an industrial ingredient with no natural food equivalent. The more a product relies on it, the more processed that product is — regardless of what the front of the label claims.

For decades, the medical community viewed postmenopausal ovaries as biologically inert, having completed their reproductive lifespan. However, a new study published in Molecular Human Reproduction challenges this conventional wisdom.

By examining the ovarian tissue of mice at various reproductive stages, researchers from Northwestern University discovered that as egg development and hormone production decline, the ovaries undergo a dramatic molecular transformation.

Rather than quietly shutting down, these organs adapt, developing a distinct 'immune-like' profile characterized by an influx of T cells, macrophages, and active inflammatory signaling pathways.

This discovery suggests that ovaries may continue to exert a powerful, systemic influence on a woman's health long after menopause. While scientists are still determining whether this post-reproductive immune activity is beneficial, harmful, or a mix of both, it raises critical questions about how ovarian aging impacts chronic inflammation across the entire body.

Furthermore, early findings from human ovarian tissue hint that these dynamic molecular shifts are not unique to mice. This research fundamentally redefines our understanding of female anatomy, signaling that these vital organs may have a second act focused entirely on systemic health and immune function.
