One day it’s warm, the next day it’s freezing — and your body has to keep adjusting behind the scenes.
When temperatures change quickly, your body works harder to regulate its core temperature. Blood vessels constantly expand and contract, your energy use changes, and dry cold air can irritate the nose and throat.
Cold weather can also slow down the tiny hair-like structures in your airways (called cilia) that normally help clear out germs and mucus. At the same time, people tend to spend more time indoors and in closer contact with others.
That’s why sudden weather swings can sometimes leave you feeling more tired, run down, or vulnerable to winter illnesses.
Layering helps because it allows your body to adapt gradually throughout the day instead of constantly overheating or getting chilled.
