Twenty futures. One opportunity.

We were honoured to welcome representatives from FEM to meet the 2026/2027 intake of our Occupational Certificate: Home Based Personal Care Worker (NQF Level 3) programme.

The 11-month course commenced on 28 April with 20 dedicated students who are taking the first steps towards a career in caregiving and community support.

This opportunity is made possible through the generous funding provided by FEM. Their investment goes beyond education. It creates pathways to employment, strengthens caregiving skills within our communities, and helps ensure that more people have access to compassionate care when they need it most.

Thank you, FEM, for believing in the power of education and for helping us equip the next generation of care workers.

We were delighted to be part of the grand opening celebrations at Shoprite Van Dyk Park, where we had the opportunity to showcase a selection of items from our Van Dyk Park Charity Shop.

Together with Shoprite and Radio 5, we spent the day meeting members of our community, sharing information about our services, and raising funds through the sale of donated goods. Every purchase made helps support our patients and their families.

Thank you to Shoprite Van Dyk Park for including us in this special occasion and to everyone who stopped by to support our cause. We enjoyed connecting with our community and being part of such a memorable day.

Today, our team swapped their usual shoes for slippers in support of Slipper Day, a fun initiative that helps raise awareness and funds for children living with life-threatening illnesses.

While our slippers may have looked a little different, our commitment to caring for our community remained the same.

Thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the day a little brighter. Together, we can make a meaningful difference, one step at a time.

“Top notch care and constant support!” Odette Deale, daughter of the late Mr NA van Deventer, shared this heartfelt message about her family’s experience with East Rand Palliative Care:

“Sr. Lindiwe was absolutely stunning. Careful, gentle, and kept us informed continually. The care was top notch. The team was always supportive and answered all my questions with such patience.”

Thank you, Odette, for allowing us to support you and your family during this time.

In 1988, fundraising became a community affair as Hospice East Rand (now East Rand Palliative Care) brought Benoni together through a series of memorable events.

The inaugural Hospice "Street Mile" Race, sponsored by the Prime Grill Restaurant and organised by the Benoni Harriers Athletic Club, saw top East Rand athletes race down Prince's Avenue, finishing in front of Plaza Square. Preceded by drum majorettes and school bands parading through the streets, it was a day of fun, fitness and community spirit, with the Mayor of Benoni, Clr Alan Barrable, handing over the prizes.

That same year, a Race Day at Gosforth Park, held in partnership with Johannesburg Hospice, raised an incredible R40 000, while the "Fun Raisers" competition challenged young volunteers aged 17 to 25 to raise funds in creative ways. Avril Pearson and Alan Ogilvie were jointly crowned top fundraisers, and 14-year-old Nicolette Nel together with 9-year-old Raine Collins remarkably raised R1 600 between them.

These events were more than fundraisers. They were the community rallying around hospice care, a tradition that continues to this day.

"Sister Barbara was amazing. A true angel — so kind and compassionate."

When Tracey Broodryk’s mother, Ingrid, became a patient at East Rand Palliative Care, their family was met with kindness, compassion, and expert guidance from the very first call.

“We were taught how to manage Mom’s condition at home. Every person we dealt with treated us with such kindness and compassion. The entire team are truly angels on earth.”

Our services go beyond clinical support. We walk alongside families, providing comfort, knowledge, and emotional strength. If someone you love is facing a life-threatening illness, we’re here for you too.

Change can sometimes create uncertainty, especially when an organisation has been part of a community for as long as East Rand Palliative Care has. For 40 years, we have adapted, grown, and evolved to meet the needs of the patients and families we serve. This next step is no different.

As we prepare to sell our current property and move into smaller premises, the heart of what we do remains exactly the same: providing compassionate palliative care and support to our community.

We invite you to watch this important update from East Rand Palliative Care.

Thank you for continuing to walk this journey with us.

World Belly Dancing Day (May 9) became something even more meaningful thanks to the incredible ladies from Almeya Belly Dance Studio.

By dancing with purpose, they raised R1000 for our R40 for 40 Years fundraiser, making a real difference to the work we do at East Rand Palliative Care.

Thank you for choosing to use your passion to give back to our community and for standing alongside us as we celebrate 40 years of care, compassion, and support.

Every act of kindness helps us continue caring for patients and families when they need it most.

The clinical evidence is clear. The human case is even clearer.
East Rand Palliative Care has made it their mission to shift the narrative from palliative care as a last resort to correctly being an integrated part of the care journey from the moment of diagnosis of a serious condition. Their work as an accredited training site, developing the next generation of palliative care professionals, is as vital as the care they provide today.
Hospice Week 2026 calls on specialists across South Africa to refer their patients to accredited palliative care earlier. It is both a clinical and a human imperative.
