Our upcoming move is about more than just a change of address. It's an important step towards making the best use of our resources while continuing to put our patients and their families first.

They say it takes a village, and we're reminded time and again just how fortunate we are to have ours. A heartfelt thank you to Greg and Caryl Palmer from MaPlotta Directory for proudly flying the East Rand Palliative Care flag at their stall at this past weekend's Rotary Business International Day.

Through their 'Come Home to Local' movement, they encourage people to support local businesses, charities and one another, helping to keep Benoni strong.

Our community has always been at the heart of what we do. As an NPO, we rely on people who believe in our work, and sometimes that support is as simple as using your own platform to spread the word about ours.

Thank you, Greg and Caryl, for being part of our village, for believing in what we do and for helping us reach more people in our community.

We're teaming up with Jump - Aholics SA for a morning of fitness, fun and fundraising, and we'd love you to join us!

On Saturday, 31 October, we'll be bouncing in pink at Wildebeest Live in Boksburg, raising funds to help us continue providing palliative care to patients and families in our community.

You don't need to be a seasoned rebounder to take part. Just bring your energy, wear something pink and come ready to have some fun for a good cause!

There will be prizes up for grabs, goodie bags for the first 30 ladies and plenty of fun along the way. We're also asking everyone to bring along an item to donate to our charity shops, giving you another way to support the work we do.

Our nursing sisters do so much more than provide medical care. They bring comfort, reassurance and professional support into the homes of patients and families navigating some of life's most difficult moments.

We're looking for another dedicated Professional Nurse to join our team and help us continue providing compassionate, specialised palliative care across the East Rand.

𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂, 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄?

We're looking for a SANC-registered Professional Nurse with strong clinical skills, a compassionate approach and a genuine passion for patient-centred care.

Experience or qualifications in palliative care would be an advantage, as would experience in community or home-based nursing. A valid driver's licence is essential, and preference will be given to applicants living in the East Rand/Ekurhuleni area.

Today is World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, and we're asking our community to imagine something different.

𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿.

Care that manages pain and difficult symptoms. Care that supports emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing. Care that works alongside treatment and supports families, often in the comfort of their own homes.

At East Rand Palliative Care, this is what we do every day. But too often, patients and families don't realise that they can ask for our support from the time of diagnosis.

Behind palliative care are people. Nursing sisters. Doctors. Social workers. Counsellors. Volunteers, and the families and caregivers who walk alongside patients every day.

Each brings something different to the care of a person living with serious illness.

At East Rand Palliative Care, our role is not simply to respond to symptoms. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻, 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁, 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲'𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.

Sometimes that means managing pain.

Sometimes it means answering questions.

Sometimes it means helping a family know what comes next.

And sometimes it simply means being there.

𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗳 𝗻𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁.

That is what palliative care is working towards.

One of the most persistent misconceptions about palliative care is that it begins only when treatment ends.

It doesn't have to.

Palliative care can work alongside doctors, specialists and ongoing treatment, providing an additional layer of support for the patient and family. That may include managing pain or difficult symptoms, helping a patient cope emotionally, providing support to family members or helping everyone involved better understand the patient's needs.

Asking about palliative care does not mean giving up. It means asking what additional support could make life more comfortable right now.

Imagine if we started that conversation sooner.

When someone is living with a serious illness, the impact is rarely theirs alone.

Partners become caregivers. Children have questions. Families make difficult decisions. Daily routines change, and sometimes simply knowing what to do next can feel overwhelming.

Palliative care recognises that families need support too.

East Rand Palliative Care works alongside patients and their loved ones, offering guidance, counselling, emotional support and bereavement support when it is needed.

Caring for the patient also means recognising the people standing beside them.

Imagine if families did not have to navigate serious illness alone.

They don't.

A diagnosis is medical. Living with it is personal.

Serious illness can affect far more than a person's physical health. It can bring pain and discomfort, uncertainty, fear, changes within the family, financial pressures and difficult questions about what comes next.

That is why palliative care looks at the whole person.

Alongside pain and symptom management, palliative care can provide emotional, psychosocial and spiritual support to patients and the people closest to them.

Good care is not only about treating an illness. It is about caring for the person living with it.

Imagine if care looked beyond the diagnosis.

At East Rand Palliative Care, it does.
