Change is hard—especially for developing brains! 🔄
Switching from open-ended days to strict morning alarms, set snack times, and structured schedules is one of the biggest transitions a child experiences all year.
Predictability provides comfort. When routines change abruptly, a child’s brain spends extra energy just trying to figure out - “what comes next?” —leaving less energy for clear communication, focus, and emotional regulation.
Here is how routine shifts can show up at home:
⏰ After-School Restraint Collapse: Kids hold it together all day to follow new classroom rules, then melt down at home where they feel safe to let it all out.
🗣️ Communication Clashes: Expressing big feelings about a new routine can be tough. Resistance, tearfulness, or becoming extra quiet are often a child’s way of saying, “I feel overwhelmed.”
⏳ Processing Slowness: Following new morning or bedtime steps takes longer as their brain builds new motor and cognitive pathways.
3 simple ways to smooth out the transition:
1. 🖼️ Visual Schedules: Draw or print a simple daily visual checklist. Seeing what comes next reduces anxiety far better than just hearing it.

✨ Let’s talk about the small wins (the ones that actually change everything). ✨

When we think about progress, it’s so easy to fixate on the massive milestones. We wait for the big, dramatic shifts—the first fully clear sentence, the complete elimination of a stutter, or a perfect clinical assessment.

But out of everything I see in practice, here is what I know to be true: Real, lasting transformation is built on the quietest, tiniest moments.

Progress isn't always a loud announcement. More often, it’s a gentle shift.

It looks like:

A sudden spark of connection: A child making spontaneous, joyful eye contact during a game.

A brave attempt: A patient trying a food texture they used to completely avoid, even if it’s just one tiny bite.

A moment of pure focus: Sitting and engaging with an activity for just two minutes longer than last week.

A quiet triumph: The pause where someone pauses, thinks, and self-corrects a sound all on their own.

A single, beautiful sound: Imitating a vowel or a consonant after weeks of hard work.

Those big, milestone moments we all wait for? They are simply a collection of these tiny, beautiful steps that finally clicked together.

To every patient and family I work with, and to anyone putting in the hard work behind closed doors: please don’t overlook the small steps. They take immense courage, and they mean you are moving forward. Every single voice, every single effort, and every tiny victory matters.

Today we pause to recognise Autism Awareness Day 💙

At our practice, autism is not something we “treat” — it is something we respect, understand, and support.

Every child we work with brings their own way of communicating, connecting, and experiencing the world, and it is our role to meet them there with patience, compassion, and care.

We celebrate the small wins that are actually very big wins — a new word, a shared moment, eye contact, a gesture, a breakthrough. We also stand alongside families on the harder days, offering guidance, reassurance, and a space where they are heard.

Autism is not a one-size-fits-all journey, and neither is our approach. We tailor every session to the child in front of us, because they deserve to be seen for who they are — not just their diagnosis.

Today, and every day, we advocate for understanding over judgment, acceptance over awareness, and support that truly makes a difference.
