The Eastern Cape Department of Health is providing health services on wheels at Mthatha Stadium as part of the Project Thubalethu Ex-Mine Workers Outreach Programme.

The mobile health services provide ex-mine workers, their families and members of the community with health screenings, testing and other essential primary healthcare services on site.
The initiative forms part of the Department’s commitment to taking healthcare services directly to communities and improving access to care.

The Eastern Cape Department of Health is today participating in the Project Thubalethu Ex-Mine Workers Outreach Programme at Mthatha Stadium, joining a coordinated government effort to bring much-needed services and support closer to former mineworkers and their families.

The programme is led by Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, together with Minister of Employment and Labour Nomakhosazana M**h, and brings together government departments and key stakeholders to assist ex-mine workers with access to benefits, compensation and other services owed to them.

The Department of Health delegation, led by Acting Head of Department Dr Mthandeki Xamlashe, alongside members of Top Management and health professionals, is providing health services and support, particularly in relation to occupational diseases and conditions associated with years of work in the mining sector.

For many former mineworkers, the effects of their years underground continue long after leaving the mines. Today’s programme is about government working together to ensure that these workers and their families are not left behind.

DATA MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP - DAY 4

From data to action!

Day 4 in Gqeberha put the spotlight on TB and HIV data, with delegates exploring how accurate and timely information can strengthen programme performance and improve patient care.

The sessions covered HIV Testing Services (HTS), TB screening, TPT initiation, TB ART quarterly cohorts, viral load suppression and line lists, with a strong focus on identifying gaps and supprting effective client follow up.

Delegates also engaged on Differentiated Models of Care (DMOC), medication availability and keeping client records up to date—key elements in strengthening continuity of care.

Through interactive presentations and discussions, the message was clear: quality data matters because better data supports better decisions, better programmes and better healthcare outcomes.

ACCOUNTABILITY IN ACTION AT LIVINGSTONE TERTIARY HOSPITAL.

A focused engagement on strengthening systems and improving healthcare delivery took place at Livingstone Tertiary Hospital, following a visit by the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA).

The visit provided an opportunity to review progress on areas highlighted through the audit process, with discussions centred on infrastructure maintenance, hospital management appointments and the utilisation of allocated infrastructure budgets.

The engagement also highlighted the importance of effective planning, sound governance and the continued strengthening of systems that support the day-to-day delivery of quality healthcare services.

The Department remains committed to addressing identified gaps, implementing corrective measures and working towards sustainable improvements in infrastructure management and service delivery.

As part of Women’s Health Day the O.R Tambo District has launched the Cervical Cancer Elimination Strategy at the St Barnabas Hospital.

The strategy was introduced by the Hon President, Cyril Ramaphosa with Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi on the 6 May 2026, mainly to prevent cervical and breast cancer and also prevent late detection.

The District started the roll out by going out to communities to find people as a means of early detection, this then necessitated the need for the district to decentralise the service from Tertiary to District hospitals like St Barnabas.
