We've all heard the saying, "Laughter is the best medicine."

Well... not quite. Antibiotics are still much better for pneumonia 😉

But laughter does deserve more credit than we give it. A good laugh can lower stress, improve mood, relax tense muscles, and help us cope with difficult days.

One of my favourite parts of being a family doctor is getting to know people over time. Sometimes the most memorable part of a consultation isn't the prescription - it's the shared laugh.

Medicine is about more than treating illness. It's about caring for people, and sometimes a little humour is exactly what's needed.

So tell me... what never fails to make you laugh? 😊

It takes a village. But what happens when yours is scattered?
Grandma's in another city. Your sister has her own job to get to. Your friends are drowning in their own babies, deadlines, and busy lives.

Sometimes what you really need is just one more pair of hands you can trust.
Someone to sit with your sick little one when you can't miss another day of work. Someone to take the 2am shift so you can finally close your eyes.
Someone you'd actually trust to step in when your family needs a little extra care.

That's the village we're building.

We are so excited to see Dr Selma Smit launch Little Care.

Little Care was created to provide compassionate support for families who need help caring for a sick child at home, or supporting parents after welcoming a baby.

While Little Care is an independent service, we believe it fills an important gap for many of the families we care for every day.

We're incredibly proud of Dr Selma and cannot wait to see Little Care grow!

Which contraceptive option is right for you?

There is no single "best" contraceptive, only the method that best suits your health, lifestyle and future family plans.

Some women prefer a daily pill, while others want a long-acting method they don't have to think about for years. Some need hormone-free contraception, while others benefit from hormonal methods that can improve heavy or painful periods.

This comparison is designed to give you an overview of the most common contraceptive options. A consultation with your healthcare provider can help you weigh the benefits, risks and suitability of each method.

At SmartCare Medical, we're here to help you make an informed decision that works for you.

Know your contraceptive options
Emergency contraception can help reduce the risk of pregnancy after unprotected in*******se or contraceptive failure, but the sooner it is used, the more effective it is.

Emergency contraception is not the same as an abortion. It works by preventing or delaying ovulation before pregnancy occurs.

Your emergency contraception options include:
• Levonorgestrel emergency contraceptive pill (NorLevo®) – ideally within 72 hours, but may still be effective up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected s*x (effectiveness decreases over time).
• Ulipristal acetate emergency contraceptive pill (EllaOne®) – effective up to 120 hours (5 days).
• Copper IUD – the most effective form of emergency contraception when inserted within 5 days by a trained healthcare professional.

If you've had unprotected s*x or your contraception has failed, don't delay. Seek medical advice as soon as possible to discuss the best option for you.

Know your contraceptive options

The Evra® contraceptive patch is a combined hormonal contraceptive that releases oestrogen and progestogen through the skin to prevent pregnancy.
Simply apply one patch each week for 3 consecutive weeks, followed by one patch-free week before starting a new cycle.

When used correctly, the patch is a highly effective contraceptive option that offers the convenience of weekly rather than daily dosing. It may also help regulate your menstrual cycle and reduce painful periods.

Like all combined hormonal contraceptives, Evra® isn't suitable for everyone. Your medical history, blood pressure and individual risk factors should be assessed before starting treatment.

If you're considering contraception, we'd be happy to help you choose the option that best suits your health, lifestyle and future family plans.

Know your contraceptive options

The va**nal ring (NuvaRing®) is a small, flexible ring that you insert into the va**na yourself. It releases a low, steady dose of oestrogen and progestogen to prevent pregnancy.

One ring is worn for 3 weeks, followed by a 1-week ring-free interval before inserting a new ring.

Many women appreciate the convenience of only having to remember contraception once a month, while still enjoying the benefits of a combined hormonal contraceptive.

Like other combined hormonal methods, the va**nal ring is not suitable for everyone. A consultation with your healthcare provider can help determine whether it's the right option for you.
